Church of St Mark, Talbot Woods.

Seeing the poverty in Bournemouth two sisters, Mary Anne and Georgina Talbot, created a model community in the 1850's known as Talbot Village with money from property they inherited. This village was to have 19 cottages, 6 farms, a school, 7 almshouses and a church. They named the church The Church of St Mark aand it was concecrated in 1870. After concecration the first service was the funeral of Georgina Talbot leaving her sister to complete their work. She donated the font which had been found in the river Tiber. The bowl is Roman and is roughly 2000 years old yet the plinth could be Etruscan and maybe five thousand years older. In 1970 the porch was added reportedly to allow brides more room to adjust their dresses. There is a carved figure of St Mark in the niche over the porch which came from two semi detached cottages in Bournemouth Square used as the first church in Bournemouth. In 1986 a major extension was built incorperating the original chacel and chapel. In 1992 the new hall was built. These alterations were funded mainly by the Talbot Family Trustees although the congregation have made substantial donations
