Eagle Centre  - Castle Fields Area Development

(Westfield)

I recently wrote of the pleasure it was to report on something positive about the new Derby architecture and how the Eagle Centre was keeping faithfully to the tradition of Derby's sweeping curves and elegance. Well until recently that was true, however Westfield have now deviated from the published plan and have ruined their shopping centre with some of the most appalling architecture since the Cockpitt Car Park, and the Assembly Rooms! Take a look at the grey tin box which now dominates our city skyline,

Not a waste processing plant! Just more industrial styled architecture viewed from Osmaston Road

A massive grey tin box now dominates the city skyline, this is void of aesthetic value and architectural integrity. The BOX will house a multi screen cinema.

The BOX as seen from the historic Wardwick where is appears as a vast grey featureless wall blocking the skyline!

This can be seen from as fare away as Markeaton Park from this direction.

Built in the 1960s, this centre was described as "A modern shopping centre with continental styled plazas" it was also predicted that it would attract tens of thousands of shoppers from outside Derby. This was rather short lived as interest waned after all the launch hype and spin and people returned to their normal shopping habits.

The view above was taken looking to the left, opposite the excellently restored Victoria Chambers on the right. This fine Victorian building is now home to the Argos Catalogue Store and Wilkinson's Hardware Store. The excellent restoration was carried out by Wesfield,  owners of the prestigious new Eagle Centre.
