An ectopic
pregnancy can be a terrifying experience and is a serious
condition, which occurs when a fertilised egg implants itself
outside of the womb, in most cases in the fallopian tube.
The baby will either die and be reabsorbed by the body or
continue to grow larger. This will cause pain and bleeding
and if not detected it can result in a rupture of the tube.
This must never be ignored as it can be fatal.
Most
ectopic pregnancies will cause a rupture in the 4th to 7th
week but in some parts of the tube it may be as late as 10
weeks. Sadly, an ectopic pregnancy always results in the death
of your baby. This is sometimes forgotten by those around
the mother, as they have been more concerned about the mother's
health.
If you
need further information The Miscarriage Association has a
leaflet on ectopic pregnancy, part of which can be found online
at their web site.
