At present, most of our workshops are taking place in primary schools for Key Stages 1 & 2 children. For part of these workshops we demonstrate shadow puppetry and then allow the children to freely create and demonstrate their own puppets. This enables the children to explore the scientific principles of light and shadow. Of course this activity also ticks many other curriculum boxes such as art and design technology.
Recycling is another theme that we like to explore and what never fails to amaze us are the many different puppets that are created by young children when their imaginations are given a free reign. Using throw-away and recyclable materials to create puppets places a value on these items and helps to reinforce the whole concept of recycling in the minds of the children. We always give positive praise to all of the children regardless of the artistic merit of their individual creations. For us, the process is the important thing, not the product.
We also offer twilight sessions for teachers who want to explore the use of puppetry in the classroom. These sessions always prove popular as can be attested to by the many feedback forms that we have received. We are more than happy to tailor these sessions to your needs and also to offer whole day sessions at a weekend, in order for you to be able to create a set of puppets that could be used for a specific project.
In most schools we only usually have a short period of time with each group in order to demonstrate a range of puppets and then to assist the children in creating their own puppets. Our aim is to inspire the students with dozens of ideas and to be the catalyst for them to continue working on their creations, and above all, to have fun!
