About this Web Site
The weather station: -
The weather station used on this site is an Oregon Scientific
WMR-968. The unit has operated faultlessly. My only criticism is
that the anemometer only updates every 14 seconds. As a result
gusts can be missed. The uni
Anemometer:- The anemometer is mounted on
the roof about 1.5m above the apex on a satellite dish bracket.
The roof is about 40m above ground level but unfortunately my
flat is located in a valley. The anemometer is therefore shielded
from a clean wind stream by the valley, surrounding trees and
St.Mary's Church.
Temperature:- The temperature monitor is
mounted on the eve of the house. It is shielded from direct
radiation for most of the day until about 4.30pm when the sun can
finally get to it. By about six it is shielded again. I am
working on a way to improve this.
Software :- The weather station raw data
is collected by Ambient's Virtual Weather Station software (VWS)
Internet Edition. The software is very flexible and produces CSV
records of all data at intervals selected by the user. I collect
data every 5 seconds and store the averages every 10 minutes.
To present the software on the internet I use both VWS and
WeatherFlash. WeatherFlash provides the flashy dials and give
live updates. I am using a 56K modem so to minimise traffic I
update every 10 seconds or so. This period will be longer when I
download .jpg graphics such as the station graphs.
Advice on the software can be found at the Ambient
Support Forum and the software can be purchased in the UK
from Meteorologica
