My Chevin Cross memories

Canon John Clayton

Greetings from Canon John Clayton on the Celebration of the 40 years of the Chevin Cross.

I was Vicar of Otley and one of the group led by the excellent Donald Good who planned the erection of the Cross. Being Chairman that year of the Council of Churches, I was privileged to preach the Sermon on that first Easter Sunday with over 200 present.

For most of the year the Cross, in three pieces, was stored in the old stables in the Vicarage Garden. Ogdens firm, then working in Otley, would take the Cross up to the Chevin.

Has anyone told you how Donald Good once found the lower part of the Cross was covered with metal communist symbols such as the swastika? I was with him when he painfully removed them.

May the Chevin Cross long show us the victory of Jesus on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
