I first graced the decks back in 1996 Happy Hardcore was all the rage back then; this is where my Djing trip begins.
In 1997 I was playing for a mate at a small and dingy club in Tiverton called The Tube every 2 weeks. I did a few nights for the same promoter that year. But mainly Free Parties.
1998 I entered a competition for Chapter 33 (Paul Booker) residency slot at The Arena in Bridgewater, came second out of twelve which wasn’t to bad considering I had only been playing 18 months. Played at loads of free parties in Devon throughout that year – the most memorable being one held in a massive chicken shed in Nomansland.
1999 I managed to get signed by Big Hammer Promotions playing at a club called Burston in Bow. The club was pretty small (with a capacity of 450) but renowned for its underground scene.
In 2000 Big Hammer began holding nights further a field at another venue in Honiton called The Paradise Club or The Pit (as it was known, cos it was). Playing there was weird because most of the punters were used to the more commercial charty side of the sense, not hard house.
By 2001 I was playing almost every weekend. I tried to record as many demo tapes as possible for hand-outs where ever I went. This worked, as another promoter called Jonah who ran Legend and Madhouse Mania gave me a call and asked me if I wanted to play at the Kingsleigh Club in Westward Ho! These where much bigger nights with top headliners such as Tony De Vit, Steve Thomas, Trevor Rockliffe and Carl Cox to name but a few.
2002 Really took off I played at my first Headliner set at Burston which was Crammed. What a night that was! We were supposed to finish at 2am but managed to carry on till almost 3 due to much appreciation.
2003 I moved to Majorca for 6 months to stay with my sister in magaluff, took my 12s in the off chance of finding work, managed to get a slot at Funky Monkeys on the strip within a month which was playing twice a week. Got some work a Charlie’s bar playing once a week as well.
In 2004 I took some time out to get my life back on track (recovery) and find a proper job. I work for Devon County Council now as one of there Corporate Information Officers.
2005 Finally back behind the steels playing funky house at a local club/pub called 3 Fat Fish in Exeter.
I’d have to say my main inspiration was the late Tony De Vit. He was by far the best DJ ever to hit the circuit. I saw him play twice, once at Kingsley and once at Burston. That boy could mix like no other– R.I.P. to T.D.V!
