I’ve always enjoyed making things. It began working with my father and then continued at school,
where my interest in silver first started; making jewellery from silver coinage. This interest
continued and grew through my Rolls Royce engineering apprenticeship years, from 1965 to 1970.
In 1975 I left engineering to become a craft teacher initially using metalwork, but as time went
on it became important to expand into woodwork, both personally and within the school workshop
environment. Constantly working with wood I found my skills set growing, and applied many methods
to wood as I once did with metal. Working in schools I had the opportunity to meet many like-minded
people and I developed an affinity for wood now producing almost everything completely in hardwood
except for the occasional piece in silver or brass.
My work I believe is unique but although the same pieces may look similar the wood grain defines the
uniqueness of each piece.
The organic boxes I create are an attempt to produce something appealing that is not circular or
rectangular but still functional, while the turned bowls and articulated fish designs are mainly to
amuse myself but have gained interest with a lot of people over the years.
I am a member of the British Toymakers Guild, and have spent many years as an exhibitor at such places
as the NEC(Birmingham), Alexandra Palace and the OXO Tower(London).
During exhibitions I mainly show my own work however I have had the opportunity of working with
companies such as Dewalt to promote wood working tools. Examples of my work can now be found in
Holland, Germany, Sweden, USA, Canada, New Zealand and of course various locations around the UK.
