The film has been shown at the Edinburgh and Sundance channel film festival.
Mike Hodges:
The film is one whole flash back, so we start with Will Graham (Clive Owen) coming to this beach, and follow the story of what happens and why he ends up on this beach.
Will Graham hinges on uncovering disturbing truths of his younger brother Davy, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
Davy, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a successful drug dealer.
Jonathan Says [talking about his character]:
He's a mirror image of what Will used to be like, he used to be handsome, cocky, you know, intelligent and women are so into him, you know, he's got that sort of buzz.
Mike Hodges:
He's that sort of cheap petty thief really, at the beginning and you think, oh this guy is really terrible, but you love the guy really, like everybody did, and what was wonderful actually that you really do be there brothers, there is a sort of physical resemblance between Clive and Jonathan, which is amazing and they act it.
Mike onset filming
[Jonathan walking scene] do it a bit slower, then I get more of it.
Jonathan: Ok great [putting cigarette to mouth] I wont go power walking (saying it in his Irish accent)
Mike Hodges then talks about shooting film on a low budget, and the benefits of shooting it quickly.
Although "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is a British film, it was financed with American money and produced by Mike Kaplin. Trevor Preston (talking about ISWID): Mike and I, have been working on it on and off it, for a very long while and it's fantastic and Mike, well the two Mikes and Clive liking it, it would have ended up in my bottom draw, with 40 other scripts.
[Back to filming on set] - Jonathan coming out of the flat, sorting his jacket and stretches then walks down the street, with black landrover.
Director then asks for the traffic to be released (Jonathan sips drink from coffee cup)
Jonathan says:
It's already darker now, he's not trying to make it darker, but you know, the little subtle things like err….. every time we shoot the streets are wet, we wet the street to give it an incredible cinematic feeling as well as inviting at the same time.
(the rest of the documentary is about the other cast members! So I'll type up the rest next week!)
