THIS PAGE STARTED ON THE 29TH August 2006
For a while now dad has been interested about going to the Donington Grand Prix Collection, but had been putting it off for this or that reason.
We arrivied at about 12.45pm, the parth leading to the entrance had a memorial statue of Senna and a few others who have died in in the world of motor racing.
As we entered the reception hall area, there are 3 F1 cars, one with a screen resting on the front of the car (I'm guessing its like a simulator of Donington), the other was a yellow Jorden F1 car, the other was Green F1 car, I noticed the driver of the car was Irish.
After getting our recipt (we didn't get tickets like other perople did!) we entered though this door, and before our eyes was a big 20ft Bugatti, which Tom Wheatcroft (the founder and owner of Donington circuit) owns. To the left of us were a long line of motorbikes and on the right an old WWII fire engine, a big disply of trophies.
There are 5 halls, full of cars, bikes and lots of Senna thing oh and a room full of Tom Whearcroft trophies
The more recent F1 cars were in the McLaren Hall, there were three of Mika Hakkinen's cars, to the right of the hall as you enterd in the hall, the most recent being his 1999 car. Mika's orange McLaren car, was only used in some testings, not actually a car he used to race in.
And to the left of Mika's three cars was David Coulthard's 2000 F1 car, I took a few pictures of it, then asked dad to take one of me next to it. A bit further down the line on the other side was Senna' car, drapped in the Brazilian flag.
Jenson Buttons 2000 car, and next to that was Montoya's car (think it was from 2002), and Damon Hill's 1996 car, which I asked dad to take a picture of me next to!
In cabinets were models wearing David Coulthards, and Mika Hakkinen's race gear, and in other cabinets near the Tom Wheatcroft trophies room, were helmets by various drivers like Rubans Barrichello, Michael Schumacher's Benetton helmet.
On all the glass windows walking by various halls were different race circuits from different countries! Myself and kept saying “oh they raced at this circuit”, “oh they didn't race at Spa this year it was dropped” etc
We couldn't go and have a look at the conference centre as there was an expedition going on.
I was surprised it wasn't that busy, being a bank holiday and all. The cafe wasn't open either, So we were hungry!
And for any fans with lots of money, the gift shop had signed photos and helmets too....
It was a good day, it may have been a long 2 hour road trip, but it was worth it! (and it was only £7 per adult!)
