Llandeilo F H 25/08/2007 W 12 - 6 -

A weakened Llandeilo side completed their pre-season build up with a narrow defeat to Llandovery 2nd XV. In sweltering heat, the home side took the lead with a try from centre Gareth Augustus. The visitors struck back with two penalties from Emyr Davies and Alex Vaughan Morris.

In a thrilling second half the visitors upped the tempo, with the back row trio of Williams, Peters and Mosley more than holding their own.

Against the run of play, the Drovers broke away with a well worked try by winger Gwilym Evans, which was converted by Aled Davies.

The visitors could have won the match in the final moments as wing Paul Jones came close to scoring in the corner.

The Drovers coach said: "It's always nice to play Llandeilo and although it was a friendly both teams showed a lot of commitment". Llandeilo coach, Barry Williams was full of praise for his side. "This was a big effort from the boys," said Williams. "Chris Mosley was out-standing at No. 8 and Alex Vaughan Morris's kicking out of hand was superb. We will take this into our game at Tenby next weekend".

Bonymaen L H 08/09/2007 W 18 - 5 1
Llandovery clipped the wings of defending champions Bonymaen, who went down 18-5 at Church Bank in the opening round of fixtures in this season's league campaign. "There were two very good sides on the park and it was quite a competitive match," said Llandovery coach Geraint Williams, whose side led 10-5 at half-time.

Fly-half Aled Davies kicked an early penalty for Llandovery but Bonymaen crossed the try line first when scrum-half Stuart Wilcox darted over.

Lock Daniel Thomas powered over to put Llandovery back into the lead, fly-half Davies adding the conversion.

Scrum-half Aled Jenkins went over for Llandovery's second try and the result was put beyond doubt when replacement fly-half Andrew Webster kicked a penalty midway through the second half.

Llangennech L H 22/09/2007 W 47 - 0 2
Llandovery, off to an unbeaten start, accounted for opponents Llangennech by 47-0.

Full-back Celfyn Davies finished with 22 points from two tries and half a dozen conversions as Llandovery overpowered Llangennech.

''Although the score suggests one-way traffic, Llangennech were competitive throughout and it was a very good game of rugby,'' said Llandovery coach Geraint Williams.

The remaining tries for Llandovery came from No. 8 John Bowen, prop Robert Hughes, centre Deian Augustus and half-backs Aled Jenkins and Aled Davies.

Waunarlwydd L A 13/10/2007 W 5 - 64 1

Llandovery top the table on points difference from Dunvant after returning 64-5 winners from Waunarlwydd, whose only crumb of comfort was a try by wing Jack James.

Wing Dylan Williams sped over for three of the seven Llandovery tries with four more shared between full-back Celfyn Davies and centre Ioan Davies. Skipper and flanker Emrys Evans added his name to the scoresheet as did wing Gareth Augustus. Full-back Davies fired over six conversions with skipper Evans also sending one between the uprights.

Llandovery emerged as the clear leaders of this year's title race after returning 17-9 winners from Mumbles, while Whitland surrendered their unbeaten record when going down 29-9 at Dunvant.

Two first-half penalties from fly-half Adrian Thomas helped Mumbles hold Llandovery to a 7-6 lead on half-time but the Drovers opened up after the break to secure victory courtesy of tries by wing Gareth Augustus and centre Deian Augustus, with full-back Celfyn Davies landing both conversions and a penalty. Centre Josh Murphy cut the deficit for Mumbles with a second half penalty.

Waunarlwydd L H 12/01/2008 W 56 - 13 1

Llandovery welcomed Waunarlwydd R.F.C to Church Bank, after a previous away encounter saw Llandovery running out convincing winners 64 – 5. The whole of the Llandovery Athletic team wishes to express their deepest thanks to Martin Rees Electrical Contractors and Hugh Evans Fencing for their dual sponsorship of the game.

The home fixture provided a comparable outcome to the away encounter, with Llandovery running out victorious 56 -13. Defeat for Dunvant, who were sunk by two penalties by Mumbles, meant Llandovery opened up a six-point lead at the top of the table.

There was much talk prior to the game that Llandovery needed to produce a solid start, after an under par performance against Narberth the previous week. The Athletic team were also eager to provide an impressionable performance for their ever growing number of local supporters present at pitch side.

Llandovery answered their coaches’ concern with a strong start from the pack, who dominated at the scrum with the aid of the ever solid props Anthony Jones and Mansel Morgan; which led to a penalty by outside half Andy Webster. With Llandovery keen to spread the ball at every opportunity it was not long until scrum-half Aled Jenkins opened the try scoring with a long run-in down the blind.

With the backs and forwards showing capability of interplaying and off-loading it was evident to see that Llandovery were the stronger side. However, the many refereeing decisions going against the home side broke up the game and allowed Waunarwlydd to recoup with a second half try. In saying this Waunarlwydd did not capitalise from their set pieces where they had a clear height advantage at the line-outs. Llandovery No 8 Aled Walters showed his ability in the line outs and followed up with good work around the park.

Despite the flow of the refereeing decisions Llandovery managed to produce some great scores close in with the pack and out wide with the backs for a total of nine tries. Other try scorers included full-back Dylan Williams, flanker Daniel Thomas, lock Dylan Thomas, the elusive wing Arwel Davies, centre Gareth Augustus, and outside half Andy Webster who also slotted over four of the conversions.

Deian Augustus made a return after a lengthy lay-off, and showed some of his previous 1st XV form by touching down twice, one of which was a fine individual effort to round the day off for what turned out to be a convincing win for the Drovers.

Llandovery welcome Dunvant R.F.C in the Polypipe Challenge Cup next Saturday, for what will be a close encounter, as at present Dunvant lie second in the table to Llandovery who maintain their position at the top of the Polypipe Civils Championship.

The Athletic team wishes to thank all the support and sponsorships received to date and hope it can continue onwards to next Saturday.

Llandovery overcame the challenge of visiting Mumbles 30-8.

"It was a big game for us and we knew that Mumbles would be up for it. Our forwards gave us the platform and the backs took it from there," said Llandovery coach Geraint Williams.

No. 8 Dafydd Thomas powered his way over for one of the three Llandovery tries with scrum-half Aled Jenkins and fly-half Andrew Webster also touching down. Webster added three conversions and a hat-trick of penalties. Mumbles replied with an interception try by centre David Gabe and a penalty from wing Andrew Davies.

Dunvant L A 22/03/2008 W 7 - 91 CHAMPIONS
A Landslide 91-7 victory by Llandovery over Dunvant was enough to secure the Polypipe Civils Championship title for the first time.

"Dunvant had very much a weakened side and those players who took the field for the club didn't disgrace themselves," insisted Llandovery boss Geraint Williams. "We were certainly up for it and turned on the style."

Llandovery lifted the Polypipe Civils Challenge Cup for the first time when recording an 11-0 victory over Whitland at Llangennech. But it was certainly no easy passage for the Drovers, who completed a well deserved league and cup double, as they came up against a defiant Whitland side that held their opponents to a 3-0 half-time lead.

"Whitland proved to be determined and well organised in defence, holding out successive attacks by us before finally conceding a try in the second half," said Llandovery boss Geraint Williams. “It was a good hard game and I am pleased that it was a successful end to what has been an excellent season for us."

Centre Deian Augustus crossed for the only try of the game with full-back Celfyn Davies adding two penalties. A try by flanker Gethin Beynon plus a penalty by scrum-half Andrew Jones were enough for Narberth to edge an 8-7 win at Waunarlwydd. The teams had been level at 0-0 at half-time.

The Llandovery Youth had an easy first match scoring thirteen tries and seven conversions. Eifion Habana Jones had the honour of scoring the first try on tour and followed that up with a second soon after. Other tries followed through Glyn Jones(2), Dylan Williams(2), Owain Jones, Aled Price, Dan Oakley, Dan Price, Rees Jones, Dan Roberts and Gareth Morgan. Eifion Jones converted two and Gareth Walters five. The game was followed by a BBQ and swopping of gifts before the team headed back to the hotel meeting room for an after match "de-brief".

This proved to be an exceptionally hard match against what turned out to be a District XV of boys who seemed much more mature than an Under 19 side. It also brought out the typical Llandovery never say die attitude as at halftime with the score at 0-0 Llandovery were reduced to thirteen men. For the next ten minutes everyone flew into tackles and rucks and with the Velox spirit broken Gareth Walters kicked a penalty, converted a try by wing Daniel Price and then converted his own try to seal a memorable victory. The after match festivities centred around Keith Faulkener presenting Arthur English, President of Vancouver Island Rugby Union with a photo montage of Harry Watkins who captained Llandovery, played for Wales, Llanelli and Victoria v All Blacks. The kangaroo court also brought their full weight to bear against all misdemeanours on tour to date.

The picturesque Brockton Oval in Stanley Park provided the final venue on tour and it wasn't until the final quarter that Llandovery were able to exert their authority and score some excellent tries. Tries came through Aled Price (2), Carwyn Poulton, Rhidian James, Gareth Walters (2), Dan Price and Dylan Williams with Gareth Walters adding five conversions. The outstanding setting of the Rowing Club provided the highlight of the tour with the party singing out over the water to the night lights of downtown Vancouver.

Glynneath C H 08/09/2007 W 29 - 12
Nigel Clarke writes:

The Drovers were excellent value for this Welsh Cup win over former winners Glynneath. With forwards working tirelessly in the hot conditions and backs tackling everything in sight the home side took the early initiative through three excellently struck penalties by outside half Gareth Walters. Following a loose clearance by Glynneath, fullback Aled Smith counter-attacked with pace and set Number Eight Dan Oakley up for the game's first try.

Llandovery led 14-0 at the interval but the pedigree of the visitors was soon evident when they counter attacked to the Drovers five metre line. From the resulting lineout their forwards powered over to get right back in the game and at this stage they enjoyed much the better of play. However, from strong defensive work the ball went loose and was fly hacked on by Llandovery. The ever alert Gareth Walters appeared out of the blue to win the foot race to the ball and score wide out. This deflated the visitors and further Drovers pressure resulted in hooker and captain Daniel Roberts powering over from a ruck. Gareth Walters added the conversion and another penalty from near the halfway to round off the home scoring. Glynneath had the last word showing character in running in a try from halfway against a tiring defence.

For the Drovers Gareth Davies was rock solid in defence, Aled Smith showed tremendous pace and elusiveness while Emyr Richards (sponsored by Duracell) just works and runs all day. However the whole team can be proud of their efforts.

Dunvant F A 22/09/2007 W 19 - 24
Nigel Clarke writes:

Llandovery came away from Dunvant with a hard earned victory despite conceding a huge amount of penalties and getting two men yellow carded.

Tries were scored by winger Sion "Moose" Morgan, centre Dan Price and hooker and captain Dan Roberts. Gareth Walters added all three difficult conversions and a simple penalty to seal the win.

With their first league match due next Saturday the young Drovers will be looking for a far more disciplined performance against last years league winners, Carmarthen Athletic.

Tries: Sion Morgan, Dan Price, Dan Roberts; Cons: Gareth Walters (3); Pen: Gareth Walters
Carmarthen Athletic L H 29/09/2007 W 8 - 7
Nigel Clarke writes:

Despite dominating territory and possession in the first half all Llandovery had to show for their efforts was an interception try from burly winger Eifion "Habana" Jones.

The Athletic had defended resolutely but when Llandovery had a simple penalty with five minutes remaining the game looked safe for the home side. However from the re-start the visitors pressurised the Llandovery defence to score a converted try to set up a nervous finish. Llandovery hung on but will look to convert pressure secured by their forwards into points in future games.

Try: Eifion Jones; Pen:
Ammanford L H 13/10/2007 W 23 - 14
Nigel Clarke writes:

Llandovery gained an excellent win against a determined Ammanford side who led 7-6 at halftime and 14-13 into the second half. However tries for Llandovery by number eight Owain Jones and wing Gareth Morgan plus three penalties and two conversions by outside half Gareth Walters saw the Drovers home.

The game was keenly contested throughout and both sides can be proud of the effort and commitment. For the Drovers their pending cup match with more local rivals Builth will need an even bigger effort and less mistakes if they are to progress further.

Tries: Owain Jones, Gareth Morgan; Cons: Gareth Walters (2); Pens: Gareth Walters (3)
Llantrisant F A 20/10/2007 L 17 - 13 2
Nigel Clarke writes:

Llandovery lost their first match of the season against a more committed Green Army team. Although leading for most of the game through a first try in youth rugby for wing Steffan Cousins, and a conversion and two penalties by the excellent Gareth Walters, the Drovers missed tackles to allow the home side a win with ten minutes remaining.

With Builth in the Welsh Cup next up the Drovers will need to be better defensively and produce a far more committed performance if they are to progress.
