Leading 8-0 at half-time, Llandovery drew further clear to beat visiting Penlan 30-0 in their first championship fixture. After dominating for most of the 80 minutes, Llandovery ran in five tries through flanker Emrys Evans, wing Martin Rees, No.8 Aled Davies, centre Wayne Price and wing Gareth Augustus, with full-back Carwyn Jones landing a conversion and penalty.

Whitland L A 13/9/03 W 11 - 25 -
It was a close first half at Whitland, where Llandovery pulled away for a 25-11 success after two penalties by full-back Carwyn Jones put them 6-5 up at half-time. Hooker Dafydd Lewis went over for Whitland before the break, with fly-half Wayne Morris landing a couple of penalties to keep his side in touch during the second period. Llandovery, however, proved too strong in the end, two of their three tries going down to flanker Aled Davies, while centre Wayne Price crossed after an interception. Full-back Carwyn Jones added two conversions. "We have a relatively young side this year and it's been a good start with two wins from two outings," said Llandovery boss Martin Davies.

Narberth L H 20/9/03 L 13 - 32 -
The Otters Athletic team had an excellent win away to Llandovery, who were previously unbeaten this season. Winger Oliver Sheldrake, who impressed on his debut last week, had a field day and ran in three tries with other tries coming from scrum-half Chris MacDonald and prop Fifitapuku Faletau. Outside-half Richard Morris converted two of the tries and in addition kicked a penalty. Tries for the Drovers were scored by wingers Rhys Davies and Gareth Augustus. Both tries were unconverted but full-back Carwyn Jones kicked a penalty. The Otters had led by 12 points to eight at the interval and extended their lead in the second half. Winger Sheldrake had another excellent game and there were also good performances by lock forward David Thomas together with winger Joel Davies and number eight Ceri Davies.

Defending champions Carmarthen Quins opened up a three point cushion at the top of the table following their 56-7 triumph at Llandovery. The Drovers, who trailed 23-0 at half time, crossed for a late consolation try through replacement flanker Nathan Davies, converted by full back Carwyn Jones.

South Gower L H 25/10/03 - - -
Llangadog L A 1/11/03 L 21 - 11 -
Llangadog got the better of Tywi Valley rivals Llandovery, leaving the park 21-11 winners after being held to a 6-3 lead at half-time.

Fly-half Gwyndaf Thomas kicked two first half penalties for Llangadog, who beat the Llandovery defence three times after the break to register tries for wing Alun Davies, No.8 Leighton James and hooker Emyr Bowyer.

Llandovery replied with a couple of penalties from wing Rhys Davies plus a try by lock Nathan Davies.

Llandovery boss Martin Davies admitted that the home side's pack was just too strong on the say. "We have no complaints about the result," he said. "The Llangadog forwards were a bit too strong for us in the end. They out-scrummaged us and performed better in the lineout. We will re-group now and get ready for Dunvant at home next week, which will be another tough one."

Dunvant L H 8/11/03 L 12 - 20 -
A hat-trick of tries from centre Regan Craig helped Dunvant continue their winning ways with a 20-12 victory at Llandovery. Full-back Lee Tucker added one conversion and a penalty to put the result beyond doubt. But it wasn't all doom and gloom for Llandovery, as team boss Martin Davies explained. "We've been through a shaky patch and though we lost, it was a much better performance this week. We are definitely on the way back," he said. Tries for Llandovery went to No.8 , one of which was converted by wing Rhys Davies.

Narberth L A 15/11/03 L 25 - 22 -
It was a close contest at Narberth, where Llandovery let slip a 15-8 half-time lead to lose 25-22. Fly-half Davies crossed for one of the three Llandovery tries, landed a penalty and the conversions to tries by scrum-half Owen David and full-back Arwel Davies. Narberth also scored three tries through centre Paul Bowen, wing Shane Higgon and replacement wing Oliver Torkington, while fly-half Richard Morris fired over the all-important kicks with two conversions and two penalties. "It was a very good game of rugby with little to choose between the teams in the second half. I thought that we did well to come from behind and win it," was the view of Narberth boss Martin Williams.

The league programme was put on hold on Saturday with the commitment of players included in the Districts squads for the Howells Cup game, but Llangennech managed to play a re-arranged fixture at Llandovery, who ran out 36-7 winners. "We are getting players back in number for training after injury and the hard work in midweek is beginning to pay off," said Llandovery boss Martin Davies. The Drovers crossed for five tries with tries for centres Jason Evans and Glyn Davies, plus others for flanker Nathan Davies, full-back Arwel Davies and wing Aled Davies. Fly-half Rhys Davies added the rest of the points with three conversions and a penalty. Llangennech replied with a try by wing Craig Bassett, converted by fly-half Eifion Howells.

Dunvant L A 13/12/03 L 18 - 14 -
A strong performance in the first half by Dunvant helped secure an 18-0 lead which turned into an 18-14 victory against visiting Llandovery at Broadacre.

Llandovery made full use of the elements after the break but a stern Dunvant defence yielded only two tries, to prop Geraint Price and flanker Ken Hughes, both of which were converted by fly half Rhys Davies, bringing the score to 18-14 with six minutes to go. In an agonising finish the Llandovery pack drove over only to be held up in in goal.

There were notable contributions from the four Trecastle based players who have joined the club this season - No 8 Owen Davies, hooker Rhodri Davies and lock David Evans up front and wing Simon Jones at the back - whilst the return of middle aged lock Dai Giles brought a new stability to the forward effort.

The biggest shock of the season in the Naylor Drainage League came at Abergwili where the Llandovery 2nd XV beat the champions Carmarthen Quins 18-3. The poor discipline of the Quins cost them dearly with the sin binning of four players giving wing Rhys Davies the chance to kick six penalties for the Drovers reserve squad, three of them fired from over 40 metres. Outstanding for the richly deserved winners was the all action back row of Ken Hughes, Owain Davies and Nathan Davies whilst the experience of half backs Geraint Jones and Gary Beaumont-Morgan proved invaluable in the rough and tumble of a hard fought local derby. Llandovery manager Martin Davies was delighted with his side's effort. He said, "We showed great discipline and composure. This is a very good victory."
Pens: Rhys Davies (6)
Llangennech L A 17/1/04 L 38 - 24 -
Llangennech picked up their first win in 2004 when beating visitors Llandovery 38-24. The best try of the game came from Llangennech full-back Peter Burrows, who raced 80 yards to score after collecting a kick ahead from Llandovery. And there was a faultless goal-kicking performance from Llangennech fly-half Eifion Howells, who finished with 28 points. He converted the try by Burrows as well as another by No. 8 Gareth Roberts. He also kicked seven penalties and dropped a goal. ''It was by far our best performance this season, with no one trying harder than lock Ceri Howells, who won the man of the match award,'' said Llangennech manager Ieuan Howells. Llandovery won the try count 3-2 thanks to No. 8 Nathan Davies, flanker Chris Thomas and hooker Rhodri Davies.

There were a good few tries at Llandovery, where visitors Whitland lost 57-0 after the Drovers development team ran in nine tries without reply. Flanker Nathan Davies went over for a hat-trick, the others to score being locks Dylan Thomas and Aled Davies, wing Simon Jones, flanker Ken Hughes, fly-half Iwan Davies and full-back Arwel Davies.

Carmarthen Quins demolished Llandovery 50-5 with a performance described by coach Gareth Evans as the best from his side this season to book a place against Dunvant in the final of the Naylor Drainage League Cup. "It wasn't that Llandovery were at all bad, it was just that we were really playing well," said Evans. The Quins were 45-0 up by half-time with a hat-trick of tries coming from centre Gareth 'Beili' Jones, the others to score being hooker Dyfrig Jones, scrum-half Wayne Evans, prop Richard Davies and wing David Abrahams. Fly-half Leighton McKenna finished it off with three penalties and three conversions. Llandovery crossed for a consolation try after the break through centre Aled Davies.

Worcester H 6/9/03 W 13 - 8 -
Llandovery Youth XV and their coach Nigel Clarke were thrilled with a fine win over powerful Worcester in a curtain raiser before the Llandovery v Neath Welsh Premiership game. The English side came to Church Bank with a big reputation only to find the young Drovers determined to start off the new season in style. With a tour of Canada arranged for the end of the season, enthusiasm for the game has never been higher under coaches Clarke and Neville Hughes.

Fly-half Celfyn Davies, back from Llandeilo, was one of the players to shine against Worcester, getting the vital second half try and conversion as well as playing soundly throughout. Skipper and No. 8 Dan Thomas was a huge influence up front with his firm tackling and strong bursts and he was very well supported by flanker Aled Walters. Thomas got a first half try from a driven maul off a lineout only for a penalty by Worcester full-back Sam Carter to close the gap to 5-3 at the break. The Davies try made it 12-3 before fly-half Roger James got a Worcester try converted by Carter with 15 minutes to go. In increasing tension, Llandovery defended for their lives to keep their line intact for a morale-boosting win over one of England's leading clubs.

Llandovery won this friendly match 29-10 scoring five tries through Simon Davies, Aled Jenkins, Daniel Rees and Deian Augustus (2). Celfyn Davies kicked two conversions. It has been a while since our last game but on Saturday 22/11/03 we played Vardre away and met a very uncompromising team who really got in amongst us and rattled us. We won 12-10 but the display was a long way off what we need and now expect. For Llandovery number 8 Dan Thomas and wing T.C. Theophilus scored tries and outside half Celfyn Davies kicked a conversion.

Llandovery made the most of their trip to Penygroes to win 29-3 with tries by prop Robert Hughes and flanker Hywel Richards, who crossed from a short lineout. Llandovery extended their lead in the second half when scrum-half Aled Jenkins broke away on the blind side of a ruck, selling an excellent dummy to the Penygroes defence before crossing in the corner for an unconverted try.

Centre Deian Augustus scored the fourth Llandovery try, converted by Celfyn Davies, who followed up with a try of his own when handed a scoring pass by full-back and brother Aled. Penygroes were stubborn opponents who made life far from easy for their visitors.

A young Drovers Development Youth team gave a powerful first half display scoring tries through Dylan James, Jason Williams, Aled Walters, Chris Thomas and Dafydd Thomas with Jason Williams kicking three conversions. Llandeilo H 3/1/04 L 13 - 15
Both teams went into this match defending unbeaten records and it came as no surprise that there was little to choose between the teams.

A fiercely contested league match was controversially won with the last move of the match by the visitors. For the Drovers Rob Hughes scored what seemed the winning try three minutes from time but seven minutes later referee Jones from Nantgaredig gave Llandeilo the opportunity for wing Mathew Jacobs to cross in the corner. Earlier two Celfyn Davies penalties were cancelled out by an interception try by centre Dean Owens with Howard Thomas adding the conversion plus a penalty. An excellent match was marred by poor refereeing leaving the hosts feeling disappointed and cheated.

Our visit to the famous home of greats like Carwyn James and Barry John provided a stern test in the first half. The home defence was superb in keeping the Drovers at bay except for a solitary Dan Thomas try. However in the second half excellent ball allowed the Drovers backs to cut loose scoring tries through wing Chris Thomas (2), full back Daniel Rees and centre Dafydd James with Jason Williams and Dan Thomas adding conversions.

Cornelly & Kenfig Hill U19s CC (1st) A 24/1/04 W (as away team in drawn match) 18 - 18 -
Llandovery coach Nigel Clarke was delighted with the commitment of his team, who took an early 6-0 lead when fly-half Celfyn Davies sent two well-struck penalties between the uprights. There were more points from the visitors when wing Michael Lowe broke through the home defence to find prop Robert Hughes up in support. Hughes showed a fair turn of speed and supplied a scoring pass for wing Carl Thomas to score.

Cornelly opened their account and reduced the deficit before half-time with a drop goal from fly-half, Nicky Giles. But Llandovery's mercurial wing Lowe pushed the visitors ahead yet again in the second half when rounding his tacklers and scoring for fly-half Davies to add the conversion. However, it was not all over by any means, with Cornelly coming back into contention with a try by wing Andy Stephens, converted by Nicky Giles and then there was a try by lock Chris Phillips.

With Llandovery leading 18-15, Giles drew the scores level with a penalty, but Llandovery had the away team rule in their favour. The Drovers will now meet Felinfoel in Llandovery in the next round.

Brynamman L H 31/1/04 W 60 - 5 -
The visitors returned over the Black Mountain with a 60-5 defeat by a Llandovery side on top of their game. Their only points came from No. 8 Paul Rumming. Llandovery pitched in for a 10-try bonanza and led 36-0 at half-time with a gale force wind at their backs. Fly-half Celfin Davies crossed twice in the first half along with wing Deian Augustus, with Davies collecting his hat-trick in the second half and finishing the match with a personal haul of 25 points. The remaining Llandovery tries were down to centre Dafydd James, scrum-half Aled Jenkins wings Chris Thomas and Michael Lowe, the last try coming from lock Dafydd Thomas.

Felinfoel U19s CC (Qtr) H 7/2/04 W 15 - 5 -
Llandovery reached their first Welsh Cup semi-final with a powerful forward effort and quality finishing. All the points were scored in the first half with the home side playing into a strong wind with fullback Chris Thomas, wing Michael Lowe and prop Rob Hughes crossing for tries. Felinfoel kept in touch scoring from a quickly taken penalty but as the game wore on the home defence with props Hughes and Anthony Jones to the fore frustrated the visitors into mistakes and poor discipline. The semi-final to be played at Llandovery promises to be a special day for the young Drovers whatever the outcome.

Fuller report: Llandovery pushed premier one opponents Felinfoel out of this year's Welsh Youth Challenge Cup - inflicting a 15-5 defeat on the visitors. Always difficult to beat on their home turf, Llandovery matched Felinfoel in every department against the wind in the first half and outscored them three tries to one. Full-back Chris Thomas was the first to score for Llandovery when he entered the line at pace and burst through a static Felinfoel defence to score in the corner. There was an immediate reply from the visitors, with wing Steven Davies crossing to level the scores following a typical fluid movement of the ball through the backs. But Llandovery regained the lead when left wing Michael Lowe received a long pass from No. 8 Daniel Thomas which missed out the centres and created the space for him to show his pace as he rounded his tacklers to score. There was more to come from the young Drovers, who took a 10-point lead into half-time with a try by Robert Hughes, who crashed over from a driving maul following a clean take at the line-out. Felinfoel did their best to get back in the game in the second half, but Llandovery denied quality possession, especially at the line-out, where the visitors struggled to win even their own ball. In the end, Llandovery finished worthy winners courtesy of a solid defence for a place in the semi-finals.

Pontyberem L Playoff   21/2/04 L 17 - 12 -
In the Premier 2 Championship, Pontyberem pulled off a tremendous 17-12 victory in Division 2I against visitors Llandovery after taking the lead when wing Huw Jones converted a try by scrum-half Lee Williams. Jones then put Pontyberem 12-0 up when he crossed in the corner for an unconverted try after the Bont pack more than held their opponents. Llandovery came back with an enterprising try from No.8 Daniel Thomas, who took a quick tap-penalty and barged through the opposition for an unconverted score. Pontyberem replied with a touchdown from centre Alec Jenkins, who rounded the Drovers' defence to score an unconverted try wide out. The first half ended with Llandovery turning pressure into points when lock Dafydd Thomas picked up from a ruck and bulldozed his way over the line. Full-back Jason Williams converted. The second half ended in stalemate with no further tries due to well-organised defences but Pontyberem had done enough to dent the Drovers' title hopes. ''Pontyberem were worthy winners on the day. Their forwards were up for the game and the backs showed their pace,'' was the verdict of Llandovery manager Nigel Clarke.

Theophilus (1 try) they had the pace and power to overcome the visitors. Replacement scrum half Mathew Bailey and No.8 and captain Dan Thomas completed the scoring. Brynamman A 27/3/04 W 14 - 39
Llandovery warmed up for an important two weeks ahead with a 39-14 victory at Brynamman. The young Drovers face unbeaten Division 2I leaders Llangennech in a crunch clash this Saturday, while Newport provide the opposition in the semi-final of the Welsh Youth Cup on Easter Saturday.

Full-back Daniel Thomas opened the scoring in a lively start for Llandovery at Brynamman, with other tries coming from No.8 Daniel Rees and centre Deian Augustus. One of the tries was converted by fly-half Aled Davies. But Brynamman recovered from the early pressure to reduce the deficit when flanker Mike Richards broke through for a try, converted by scrum-half Dafydd Jones. Sixteen-year-old Richards is Brynamman's leading try scorer and certainly takes some stopping. He crossed for his second try after moving to the centre because of an injury. Scrum-half Jones again converted, cutting the Llandovery lead to just three points. And there was more to come from Brynamman as they hit a purple patch, but the Drovers defence was up to the task and denied their opponents any further points. The sin-binning of Brynamman scrum-half Dafydd Jones proved crucial in the game, with Llandovery capitalising on their numerical advantage to add more tries through wing Michael Lowe and flanker Aled Walters. Another two tries came from No.8 Daniel Rees and full-back Daniel Thomas, both of which were converted by fly-half Aled Davies

Llangennech L P/Off 10/4/04 W 19 - 7 -
Llangennech suffered their first defeat of the season, 19-7 at Llandovery. The visitors were on the defensive for the first 20 minutes but made the best possible start with a superb try under the posts. Llandovery replied with a try just before half-time when centre Deian Augustus touched down for fly-half Aled Davies to level with the conversion.

The Llandovery forwards dominated from the start of the second half and forced their way towards the try line where they were awarded a scrum. Scrum-half Aled Jenkins darted in to score and Aled Davies converted to put Llandovery 14-7 up. The last try also started in similar fashion when No.8 Daniel Thomas picked up, drove on and created space for right wing Chris Thomas to go over in the corner.

Newport U19s CC (Semi) 17/4/04 L 0 - 36 -
A very strong Newport side were able to gain dominance in scrum and lineout, enabling a very good back line to secure a convincing win. But the Drovers tackled with courage throughout and prevented a number of further scores.

The Drovers themselves came within yards of scoring on a number of occasions, but good cover work by Newport held them out each time. The last 20 minutes belonged to the Llandovery team as they continually battered the Newport line, but the visitors' outstanding defence held out to secure a final score which did nothing to reflect the Drovers' excellent effort.

The sizeable crowd of some 200 spectators left the ground feeling that the Drovers had given their all but the strength and speed of the Newport team meant that this was not to be the Drovers' day. The young Drovers battled to the very end and all the players can be proud of their efforts and will learn a great deal from playing such powerful opposition.

Llandeilo East Carmarthenshire Youth Cup H L (as home team in drawn match) 15-15
Llandeilo booked a place in the final on the away side rule after a 15-15 draw at Llandovery. Llandeilo took the game to Llandovery and following some good running rugby full-back Mathew Jones crossed the line for the only try of the first half, converted by Howard Thomas. The Llandovery forwards increased their workrate and were rewarded when hooker Emyr Phillips scored. Llandovery hit a purple patch with the ball moving sweetly out to wing Chris Thomas who touched down for fly-half Celfyn Davies to convert.

With only minutes remaining, Llandovery went 15-12 up with a superb drop goal from the halfway by Celfyn Davies. Llandeilo ground their way down the field forcing Llandovery to concede a penalty. Howard Thomas stepped up with the wind against him and with the additional pressure of being informed that this was the final kick of the match. He put all the pressure behind him to strike the ball cleanly between the uprights to even the scores and take his side into the final against Llangennech.

Pontyberem H 24/4/04 W 22 - 17
The visitors raced into a 17 point lead taking every chance that came their way but a try just before half-time by tireless flanker Conah Davies signalled a revival and dominance in the second half by the Drovers. Tries came from scrum-half Aled Jenkins, centre Dafydd James and wing Daniel Rees with outside half Celfyn Davies kicking one conversion.

Llangennech A 1/5/04 W 10 - 13
Llandovery had to withstand a torrid opening, conceding a try by the quick footed Llangennech outside half which was converted. Towards the end of the half the Drovers forwards began to get into the game resulting in two penalties for Celfyn Davies. The second half saw the Llandovery forwards continue to pummel the home try line only for desperate defence to keep them at bay. A further penalty pushed Llangennech 10-6 up but with pressure building from the pack the ball was worked blind for outside half Celfyn Davies to score wide out and convert his own try to put his side into the lead. Llangennech threw everything at Llandovery but resolute defence saw them home.
