Dore-Westbury Milling Machine Upgrades

The DW Milling Machine (a Mark II) was not in a fully usable state when I purchased it it's obviously been well used. I've made a few mods to it to make it more usuable I hope to add details of these as I get pictures.

For more information on the DW Mill (inc drawings) have a look at the DWMILL Yahoo Group Note you will need to register but it is free!

Noisy Knocking

I've been using the Milling machine a lot recently with all the work on "Spencer" and it's a very noisy afair! Each time a tooth of my indexable cutter came into conatc with the work there was a loud knock coming from the top of th emachine. This week I decided to investigate. The culprit soon became obvious.

This is the plate which transfers drive from the driven pulley/gearbox assembly to the splined shaft attached to the mandrel. If you squint you can see the two "teeth" that enage in the spline are very worn and it is this free play that caused the knocking noise. I had a play around with some brass bar but that didn't look right so I posted a request on the Model Engineering forum here and a chap called Albert responded with his fix which has lasted 25 years!

First a piece of steel 1/2" high and just the right size for the splines was cut to size.

Slots were filed in the drive plate so the steel plate was a nice tight fit.

My brazing hearth has finally been moved to it's final resting place in the garden just under an external light so it was into the garden at 9PM to have a play.

I was a bit heavy handed with the Silver solder but it's probably the third or fourth thing I've tried so not too bad. Be a while before I can build boilers though! The excess was trimmed off on the lathe. I managed to fill one of the 6 moutning holes but managed to leave the extra holes left over from a previous experiment. The splines just about fit just need some final fettling.
