MANLEY OLD HALL DOVECOTE INSIDE WEST DOORWAY |
On the inner side of the west doorway it is possible to see the remains of a finely carved moulding where the original stones remain intact. Where the south wall joins the west wall there is a curved recessed slot which could be where a securing bar could swing down to secure a door. An upper hinge bracket is still in position on the upper north side of the doorway and the fixing slot for a matching lower hinge can be seen in the lower position. The conclusion being that this doorway was closed by a substantial door. The eastern doorway does not have any of these features and shows no indication of being capable of closure. |
