PROJECTS

Originally the site on Barton Moss was occupied by Foxhill Farm as shown on a map of 1926. The Moss had been drained and filled by night soil from Manchester.

The airport opened in 1930 with a Runway, Control Tower, and large Hangar and was one of the first municipal airports in the country.

The terminal facilities were provided by converting one of the farm's stable buildings. STAG have surveyed the exterior and interior of this building and have been able to recreate the original plan of the terminal building. Click on the picture to obtain the details.

The farmhouse was converted into the airport hotel. This was demolished in the 1960's.

Towards the end of the 1930's additional buildings were constructed to accommodate the testing of aircraft and an RAF training establishment. The RAF took up residence about July 1938.

This the second hangar was probably added to the site to assemble aircraft from Fairey Aviation for testing and presumably delivery from Barton.
