Ski Holiday in Sestriere, Italy - March 2004

An excursion into the Dolomites during a Lake Garda holiday last summer gave Tim and me the idea to choose Italy for our next ski holiday. I fancied Sestriere, having peeped towards it from the crest of the mountains above Sauze D'Oulx on one of my earliest ski holidays in 1980!

We travelled with Crystal to their Club-Hotel Argento as this was the only chalet-style holiday on offer. It was in Borgata, a small satellite village a little way below Sestriere itself and turned out to be ideally situated with a trio of key lifts just across the road. One went above Sestriere giving access to more lifts and a very attractive blue run back to Borgata to get the day off to a good start, another to steep red runs amongst the trees, and the third being the gondola direct to the ridge giving access to the vast range of Sauze D'Oulx's skiing.

The World Cup finals had been held in the previous week and the competition runs remained closed during the week for an event for disabled skiers from all over the world. Watching blind, one-legged or seated skiers flying down these icy pitches took the breath away. We were filled with admiration and respect.
