Ski Holiday in Bad Gastein, Austria - February 2003

Tim and I chose Bad Gastein in Austria for this year's ski holiday, booking with Ski Miquel (as used for last year's holiday in Baqueira in Spain). Friends Ian and Paul joined us, then I discovered that Chris and Terry, who we had met last year in Baqueira, had booked to stay in the same resort, in the same chalet for the same week! So we were really looking forward to meeting them again.

We stayed at the Chalet-Hotel Tannenburg, just a few minutes walk down from the gondola station and railway, with about 30 guests in all. A few more were at the extremely elegant Hotel Wildbad nearby. Bad Gastein itself is an old spa town, catering for wealthy clients eager to seek a "cure" in the geothermally-warmed waters, and was more interesting to explore than the purpose-built French resorts we have used in recent years. The skiing linked via the Angertal valley with Bad Hofgastein, and by bus up the valley to Sportgastein and down the valley to Dorfgastein. It was 15 years since I had last skied in Austria (at Schladming) and we were delighted by the welcoming atmosphere, and lucky to have had masses of snowfall before we arrived and unbroken sunshine while we were there.
