Ray Mounfield won Letchworth GC Open

4 June 2011

Competed by eight players in the handicap range 0-2, the 1st Letchworth GC Open was won by Ray Mounfield, who finished with six wins from seven games. Simon Carter and Tim King finished on five wins apiece, with Duncan Hector and Nick Mounfield each on four wins.

In winning, Ray proved that precise, careful play can be more than a match for spectacular clearances and long-distance hoop runs - especially on super-fast lawns, which show no forgiveness for over-hit hoop approaches!

Other highlights saw Duncan Hector's handicap reduce from 2 to 1, and young Tim Race produce the kind of ability to suggest that it's only a matter of time before he whizzes up the ranking and starts collecting silverware.

Terrey Sparks won the Letchworth B-Level Advanced Tournament
13-14 July 2011

Terrey Sparks won the inaugural Letchworth B-Level Advanced Tournament.

Ten players took part, some from as far away as New Zealand.

The first round was played in two blocks of 5, all-play-all. As a semi-final, the winner of each block then played the runner-up in the other, and then the two winners competed in the Final with a consolation Egyptian for those who wanted to continue playing. All games were played with a time limit of 2 hours plus 6 Wharrad turns. That said, only 4 games out of 23 went to time.

The rain held off for both days. It was quite chilly on the Wednesday; Thursday though was bathed in sunshine. The lawns attracted a lot of favourable comments for their excellent condition, a tribute to the hard work that had gone in to their preparation.

Everyone took advantage of the very good ploughman's lunches provided in the Lawn Tennis and Social Club pavilion adjoining the courts, and several competitors then enjoyed a local Pub meal on Wednesday evening.

After a number of close fought games, Terrey Sparks beat Terry Mahoney in one Semi-final, and Derek Watts beat Mark Homan. In the Final, Terrey Sparks beat Derek Watts, and so received the silver cup, Derek having to be content with the runner-up's bottle of wine. Mark Homan beat Pauline Reid.

Richard M Smith won the Letchworth Advanced Weekend
20-21 August 2011

In only its second year, Letchworth Croquet Club's Advanced Weekend again attracted a strong field - eight players all with handicaps of scratch or below. As it had the previous year, the result hinged on the very last game, this time between Richard M Smith and Nigel Polhill. Unfortunately Nigel had been knocked out of the reckoning in his previous game against Christian Carter, but Richard needed to prevail in order to retain the title. And so he did, winning in style (+26) to edge Christian into second place.
