Current Projects
include:
School Concert: Each
year about 10 schools take the opportunity to perform for about 10 minutes on
the stage at The Lichfield Garrick Theatre. The school music and drama departments
prepare the pupils and they have a dress rehearsal on the day of the
performance. The profit from the evening
performance is divided between the participating schools.
Arthritis
Care Club meets monthly.
Started with our assistance in 1991 and ever since it has received the help of
club members.
Life
Education: The objective
is to prepare junior school students for the health related choices they will
have during their teenage years. Peer pressure frequently has to be resisted
when they have the choice of over-eating, smoking, drugs, sex, solvent abuse
etc. The program uses many modern technical innovations, delivered within the
caravan to achieve a lasting impression. They need to understand that if they
say ‘Yes’ it will be regretted as it is likely to affect the remainder of their
lives. ‘No’ is the obvious choice. The club was involved with the purchase of a
suitable mobile travelling classroom to visit schools. It has continued to
promote its use with letters and visits to schools, and with finance.
Stroke
Awareness: Most people
who have a stroke could prevent it if they recognise the symptoms. It can
usually be recognised in advance as the blood pressure rises. The club
organises blood pressure testing in a city centre location each year and
promotes self awareness of the causes of Stroke.
Encourage Community involvement of young people. Currently the Air Training
Corps are willing helpers at many of the projects organised by Rotary.
Kids Out: Each year we take a party of young people to
Drayton Manor from one of the Special Schools in
Community Service for 50+years
The club has
involved themselves in many hands-on projects over the years. Here are some of
the projects that were old regulars in the past.
Birthday Visits to the Elderly when a gift has been
provided. Assist with Holidays for
elderly and young at West Winds Hotel and other locations.
Pantomine visits for the elderly and handicapped – up to 100 people/yr
Carol Singing by Rotarians in local Hospices and Care
Homes.
Visiting Prisoners at Swinfin Young
Offenders Unit.
Mock Interview Scheme for senior pupils at secondary schools.
You will note that
the above projects all involve hands-on activities. There have been many larger
one-off projects involving adventure playgrounds, gardens etc that have drawn
heavily on club finances. Also the club helps a range of worthy local causes
with finance, but the club gives a strong preference to institutions and groups
rather than individuals.
