Parented by the Walsall club
on Monday 29th Oct. 1951, the club has passed through its youthful
years when Father Christmas would visit the Guildroom or the old Garrick
Theatre after touring the city by vintage car or arrive by helicopter!? This
was all part of fun of the Annual Christmas Fair. One year the members took
ballet lessons which culminated in a performance of Swan Lake. The club became
a respected member of the city community and gave birth to an evening club,
Rotary Club of Lichfield St. Chad. For
the last 10 years membership has remained steady, the outcome of a very
successful fellowship. Many members choose to remain in service with the club
until called to higher office. Over the years the club has arranged many fund
raising activities that have provided valuable contributions to the social life
of the City. Celebrity lectures have
included Chris Bonnington, Lady Barnett, Phil Drabble and Graham Hill. The club brought Songs of Praise to the
Cathedral in 1987. The school concerts
provide opportunities for hundreds of young people to perform on the premier
City stage in front of a packed house.
Extra Car Parks were opened in the city centre on Saturdays before
Christmas. The public have been involved in numerous competitions, including
the annual supermarket trolley raffles and bottle stalls. Those with good
memories join about 150 contenders in the annual Quiz evening. The Charter
evenings, Ladies nights and other large balls invariably produce funds for
charity and great memories for all participants.
The club has welcomed lady
members since 2001. Partners and widows are made particularly welcome the 5th
Tuesday of the month. We have
speakers two lunch meetings per month. The other two weeks are used for
committee meetings and business. Friendship has been forged over many years
together, but we continue to seek new recruits who enjoy our form of service to
Lichfield and the world. Please contact Brian Homewood, Membership Chairman for
