1871 CENSUS

The 1871 census records the newly married Joseph and Martha Appleton at 52 Hardings Row, Bushy Lane, Rainford, Lancashire and records Martha's place of birth as Alesha Moor. This caused many month's of frustration, even when combined with Bolton, the place of birth recorded in the 1881 census (above). No such place could be located, even the Archivists at Bolton couldn't help. Then one day whilst working through the index of churches in the Bolton area, we came across St John, Farnworth, (Halshaw Moor), Bolton. The records of this church were quickly examined and sure enough Martha's baptism was recorded there on 3rd May 1852, her parents marriage was also found there on 14th Jan 1839 and the baptisms of all eight of her brothers and sisters between 1839 and 1858.
