plymouth volksfest 2008

This is the first year for Plymouth Volksfest, held in the picturesque grounds of Newnham Park, Plympton. Ok, so it’s a little further afield for me then usual but the 300 mile each way journey in a ’64 Splitty didn’t put us off.

We arrived on the Friday evening after travelling for 10 hours (long story, involved a lot of pushing, hahaha), had a glass of cider and chilled out. There were lots of people at this show, hundreds of campers already on the Friday, let alone what turned up on the Saturday and the rest of the BH weekend!

Lots of traders and food vendors, although I can’t recommend the garlicless garlic bread or the german sausage in tomato sauce.

As this was a festival, the organisers had gone to a lot of trouble to provide entertainment, and it worked! The two main acts I can remember (very drunken experience) were Flame, the South coasts fire performance group and Druids Brew. For those of you who haven’t heard of this two-piece band, they are touring Europe playing songs from their ‘65 Samba about Volkswagens. Very nice guys and very chilled…. I thought they were fantastic and hope to see them at other VW shows this year!

There were also two beer tents at the show, one with live bands each night including Ring of Fire (Jonnie Cash tribute act), Mad Dog McRea and the Sex Pistols Experience, and the other as a late night dance tent.

Overall, the weather held out for most of the weekend and the show was a big hit, especially considering it was it’s first year and it coinsides with Run To The Sun. I know what I’ll be choosing next year.
