LOndon volksfest 08
Hi, we are new members; our van is a 1971 early bay brought from fellow members the Allard’s last September. Our van has been in the body shop for most of 2008 – but we hope to have it ready for the Great Horskley show so hopefully will meet a lot of club members’ there. We have been to the Battlesbridge show and Volksfest was our second show of the season. Here is our story…
Our big decision when we woke up on Saturday morning was Peppercorn or Volksfest? I read out the show itinerary to my 8 year old daughter Hannah, and as soon as I mentioned drag strip racing over a ¼ of a mile that was it! Volksfest here we come!
The show itself hosted approximately 300 vehicles mostly VW’s of all types, T2’s T25’s, T4’s and Beetles plus a big selection of customised Golf’s and USA muscle cars.
The show was held at North Weald airfield and as such has no overnight camping. This meant an absence of the friendly ambience and camaraderie, which is typical, at most shows where camping and a festival atmosphere prevail.
There were many beautiful VW’s on display including a Herbie replica Beetle and a large number of bays and split screen vans. Our favorites are below.
The show highlight was undoubtedly the drag racing. You have not lived until you see a 1965 split screen outpace a 1990 BMW M3 over the ¼ mile. The van clocked sub 14 seconds and as such qualified for the Vans with attitude Club (available to all sub 18 second vans).
In summary a great show, lots to see and do including a plethora of auto jumble for all types of VW but with a little something missing. My daughter Hannah summed it up when she said
‘’Nice show Dad but next year can we go to Peppercorn instead?’’
