Going to school at Eton and being seriously rich usually means taking an interest in Rugby or cricket. Soccer is not really quite the thing for the upper echelons, but Ipswich Town chairman, David Sheepshanks, was introduced to football at the age of 12. His father's gamekeeper, who had obviously taken a shine to the young lad took him to his first soccer game. The youngster obviously felt great admiration for the gamekeeper and looked up to him as an older brother or kind of father figure. The keeper's love of the game rubbed off on the young boy and he retains a lifelong passion for the sport. The picture on the right shows the two together on a recent shopping trip and illustrates how friendship can bridge the class structure. | ![]() |
