Hairballs
There is controversy over whether chinchillas do in fact suffer with hairballs the same way the average cat or dog does. I cannot see any reason why they would not, as like the previously mentioned animals they groom themselves and are just as likely to swallow their fur. This cannot be digested and as such will cause obstructions in the intestine. There have been several documented cases of death in chinchillas caused by exactly this problem.
You can buy treatments for cats or dogs (such as Petramalt ©) at your local pet shop that would be suitable for chinchillas. Try to find a mild one that would be suitable for young animals. If you do not have any available, an alternative is pineapple juice added to drinking water. Given over three to five days this should dissolve the hairball. Papaya juice can also be used, or chunks of dried papaya (not sweetened) though it is dubious how effective these would be after the drying process.
