Eye Infections/discharge/weepy eyes.

Numerous causes, malocclusion, blocked tear ducts, infection, dust from the dust bath getting into the eye. Is the eye weeping clear fluid or is it coloured (white or sometimes yellow) ?

If it is just due to some form of irritation, Optrex eye drops can be used to clear away the irritant. If you do not have this to hand, gently wash the eye with previously boiled, cool water. Make sure it has cooled down before use. Gently flush the eye, you want to wash away whatever is causing the irritation. Check with your vet to make sure the eye has not been damaged and that there is no sign of infection.

If you notice a discharge of some form then it is highly likely that there is an infection of some form. This will require a visit to the vet.

Can be seen in combination with drooling if the cause is a tooth problem. Sometimes the roots of the top teeth grow up wards towards the eye socket causing pressure and pain.

Contact your vet for advice, and get them to check the chinchilla. Get an X ray of the head to check for excessive root growth.
