Is the chinchilla continually wiping it's mouth as well ? One possible cause is a tooth problem, see the section on malocclusion. Another is a splinter of wood lodged between the teeth causing pain and discomfort, or possibly compacted food in a part of the mouth that can not be dislodged (can occur with mixed feeds).
