Diarrhoea

Increase the roughage content of the diet by increasing the amount of hay they are given and decreasing the amount of pellets for a few days. Add a few squares of burnt toast, burnt completely black (the charcoal is good for the problem and helps dry up the diarrhoea and absorb any nasties floating around inside the intestine), give this a few times daily, along with the hay, pellets and water for the next 24hrs. You can also allow your chin 1tsp of natural/live yoghurt. You can give 2 or 3tsp of this during the 24 hour period after the starvation at various times during the day. This helps balance out the bacteria in the digestive system BUT it has also been suggested that the milk sugars and carbohydrates in yogurt may promote overgrowth of the harmful type of bacteria . Add cider vinegar to the drinking water to help promote growth of normal gut flora. Mini shredded wheat can also be useful. Gradually re-introduce the pellets and watch the consistancy of the droppings, if they become soft again decrease the amount again. Charcoal nuts can also be fed 2-3 times per week to help prevent diarrhoea.

Kaolin liquid (available from chemists) can be given daily, 1-3ml.

You might want to consider buying a probiotic from your vet. This will help speed up recovery time as the probiotic will replace all the "good bacteria" that have been lost during the stomach upset.

You might want to try the charcoal used by artists if you have some available. This will have the same effect as the burnt toast, but without setting your fire alarms off and making you unpopular with the rest of the family. Use only a small amount.
