Unfortunately, this situation occurs all too frequently. On the rare occasions when a kit has been rejected by it's mother, orphaned or on the very rare occasions when the baby is attacked by it's own mother the chinchilla has to step in to fill the gap.
You will have to dry the baby if the mother has not done this already. Use a towel, rubbing gently to help stimulate circulation. A hairdryer set on low and warm can also be used ( I keep one in my shed with the chinchillas for just that purpose) to dry out the baby and get it moving.
