Vanodine V18 or any other disinfectant do not sterilise, they only sanitise, true sterilisation would require the very high temperatures produced in an autoclave. Concentrations of disinfectant strong enough to truly sterilise would make them too toxic for general use. Disinfectants such as V18 can have a broad spectrum killing action i.e. they can kill bacteria, fungi and viruses but not necessarily ALL and usually not bacterial spores.

Vanodine can be added to the water in watering systems, but please remember, only for reducing the number of harmful bacteria in the water, at the dilution used it would not be effective against a number of microorganisms. It is not intended to kill disease within the animal only to kill pathogens in the water which can be a source of infection for the livestock. Watering systems still need to be regularly cleaned and disinfected to prevent disease transmission from one cage to the next. Organic matter (dirt) can render it ineffective at low concentrations, so do not rely on the small amount floating round the system to keep it completely clear of infection.

Also in it's favour is it's low general toxicity, wide killing spectrum, deep penetration, long shelf life, it is non-flammable, visible activity (when it looses it's colour it has also lost it's activity and needs to be changed), low cost, non-corrosive, it does not contain alcohol, and is biodegradable. It is a powerful cleaner, and can also be used for washing out food bowls, water bottles, cages and the chinchilla unit itself.

Active solutions of Vanodine are amber to yellow in colour. It is recommended to prepare a fresh solution when the colour fades to a pale yellow. The temperature of the water used to dilute the Vanodine must not excede 43° C.
