Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Albert Einstein is perhaps the best-known scientist of the 20th century, and perhaps the greatest of all time? (Apart from Newton?)

He is best known as the creator of the Special and General Theories of Relativity and for his hypothesis concerning the Particle Nature of Light.

His five papers, published in 1905 were pivotal in the development of physics

He is less well known for his social involvement, although he was a staunch supporter of both Pacifism and Zionism.

Einstein was born in Ulm on 14th March 1879, and spent his youth in Munich, Germany where his family owned a shop that manufactured electric machinery. He did not talk until the age of three, but did show an ability to understand difficult mathematical concepts.
At the age of 12 he taught himself Euclidean geometry.

When Einstein was 15 the family left Germany for Milan, Italy.
He finished secondary school in Arrau, Switzerland, and entered the Swiss National Polytechnic in Zurich. In 1900 he passed his exams and graduated,
but his professors were not impressed with him!
, so he could not secure a position
at the university.

For the next two years Einstein was a tutor and substitute teacher, until in 1902 he became
an examiner in a patent office in Bern.

During 1903 Einstein married Mileva Mariçone, one of his classmates at the polytechnic.
