Ralph McTell has been amongst the very top singer-
songwriters on the folk scene since his enormously
influential albums of the 1960's and '70's. With a
reputation that goes far beyond these shores he is
used to performing in venues of the calibre of Sydney
Opera House and The Royal Albert Hall.

Cranleigh Arts Centre is therefore very fortunate to
be included in the exclusive list of venues for his
"Up Close" tour in September. The theme of these
concerts is the early musical influences on Ralph's
remarkable 40-year career.

In these shows, Ralph will pay tribute to the music
which first inspired him. He will take you on a journey
through time from early masters like Blind Blake,
Big Bill Broonzy, and Blind Boy Fuller to Woody
Guthrie who, of course inspired so many contemporary
songwriters including Bob Dylan and Ralph himself.

Don't miss this never-to-be-repeated concert - come
and see Ralph's roots showing!

Admission £22.50

In 1959 Shirley Collins joined legendary musicologist
Alan Lomax on a year-long journey through the musical
heartland of the Southern States of America. During
this field trip they recorded the music of religious
communities, social gatherings, chain gangs and
prisons and discovered the legendary bluesman
Mississippi Fred McDowell. These original recordings
were featured in the Coen brothers’ film Oh Brother,
Where Art Thou
and Moby's Play album.

In this show, which is illustrated with photographs and
recordings taken on the trip, Shirley is joined by actor
Pip Barnes to provide readings from her book recounting
the journey America Over The Water.

This show is part of an Arts Council funded tour to
coincide with the publication of the paperback edition
of America Over The Water.

Admission £10.00 on the day (£9.00 in advance)

Dave Swarbrick has been the most revered fiddle
player on the English folk scene for four decades, from
his ground breaking partnership with Martin Carthy via
membership of Fairport Convention during the vintage
years to the founding of supergroup Whippersnapper.

His musical progress was temporarily halted by serious
illness that resulted in the infamous publication of his
obituary in The Daily Telegraph! So now he's back and
raring to go what better name to give his latest
musical venture than Swarb's Lazarus!

In the company of a fellow ex-Fairport member,
multi-instrumentalist Maartin Allcock, and a fellow
ex-Whippersnapper, guitarist Kevin Dempsey, Dave
is about to set the folk scene alight again.

Admission £16.50 (£15.00 in advance)
