Jonathan Booty

After initial training as a flautist, studying at the Royal College of Music and in Paris, Jonathan spent the first part of his career as Assistant Principal Flute in the Hallé Orchestra, as well as freelancing with many other British orchestras and giving solo recitals. Over the past few years, he has been writing and performing his own compositions and after completing a part-time Mus.M. degree in composition at Manchester University. He subsequently studied for a Ph.D in composition with Prof John Casken, receiving financial assistance from the AHRB and the Performing Rights Society Foundation

He is now active as a freelance flautist as well as a composer. Recent performances of his work have taken place at Manchester and Liverpool Hope Universities - the premiere of his Piano Quartet in March 2003 as part of the Psappha Contemporary Music series - and at the BABSWE festival in March 2002 as well as in Birmingham. Chalk Farm Refrains was premiered by New Noise at the launch event of the Sound Source series at Bartok Bar in London in June 2005 and in December 2006 Ensemble Fauve premiered two works - The Dark Island and Apres l'apres - at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester.

Jonathan recently participated in the SPNM's Folk from Here project which took place over 5 months in which four composers collaborated with five leading folk instrumentalists to write new works for performance in York, Manchester, London and Cheltenham - see Projects page.

Since March 2008 he has been touring with the South Indian contemporary dance group - Srishti (www.srishti.co.uk) - in their production 'Play Ball' in which he has been perfoming music by the Carnatic composer and vocalist Y. Yadavan - see Projects page.
