"The Street at the Ford on the River". The name comes from the crossing of the Avon, by the Roman Road from Alcester (Alauna) to the Foss Way. Strat is direct from the Latin for Street, and Avon is the Celtic word for river. A Market town in a delightful riverside setting. It's worldwide fame and popularity, is due to the influence and associations of the bard William Shakespeare. Even if Shakespeare had never been born here, this ancient market town would still be a fascinating place to visit. A stroll along it's busy streets, reveals a wealth of domestic architecture, including some Elizabethan gems. There are many attractive and unusual shops, good pubs and restaurants, and beside the Avon, amenities for boat trips, rowing, fishing, and watching the Narrow Boats passing through the lock gates. NB: At present this is really my 'cheat page'. As our visits to Stratford-upon-Avon this year, have been for other than photographic purposes, I have been unable to complete this page, and being aware that visitors, perhaps potential tourists, may be searching for such information, I have obtained pictures from various sources, so there is at least something to look at. Hopefully, these together with my descriptive text, will fill the gaps for now. These photographs will be removed, and replaced as and when I take my own, (weather permitting). Ownership of those photographs used, is highlighted in the descriptive text, which can be seen by clicking on the page icon. |
