Halifax's Square Chapel was built in 1772
by the same architect who designed the Piece
Hall - the eighteen-year-old Thomas Bradley
- and who lies buried in front of the chapel.
It stands beside the Piece Hall along with
its 19th century Gothic replacement - and
while the newer church had closed by 1969
and was destroyed by fire in 1971 - Square
Chapel managed to avoid the same fate. It
is Britain's only remaining square chapel
and is now a vibrant centre for the performing
arts - music, drama and poetry. The chapel
even has its own orchestra - The Orchestra of Square Chapel
There is a book by Jessica Sutcliffe (and
simply entitled "Square Chapel Halifax")
available which explains the history and
architecture of the chapel (ISBN: 0953004104).
