The TreesIn the absence of the completed study here follows a transcript of Marshall's book: "Collections for a Genealogical Account of the Family of Comberbach". COLLECTIONS FOR A GENEALOGICAL ACCOUNT OF THE FAMILY OF COMBERBACH. BY GEORGE-W MARSHALL, LL.B. LONDON : 1866. A copy of this book that I have was once owned by John Paul Rylands, FSA, of Highfields, Thelwall, Cheshire. His armorial book plate is in the front cover and is included here. His motto "Dum Spiro Spero" means 'While I breath, I hope". John Paul Rylands' father, John Rylands, was a wealthy Lancashire cotton mill owner and died in 1888 leaving a £2.5m legacy. The 'John Rylands Library' was dedicated to him by his wife. John Paul's grandfather Joseph Rylands founded the firm "Rylands and Sons" in 1819. John Paul Rylands and George William Marshall edited several publications for the Harleian Society and John Paul probably obtained his copy as a gift from George W. Marshall. John Paul Rylands wrote the memoir to George William Marshall in Genealogist, new series vol: xxii. pp: 198-202, when he died in 1905. Please note, the book was scanned and OCR'd and I have spent hours on corrections, poor thing got very confused with the latin! I have tried to check as much as I can but I have no doubt that errors will have crept in. Please do not consider this to be a reliable secondary source. |
