A Brief History

Dinky Toys were introduced in 1931 as 'Modelled Miniatures', and these delightful diecast metal toys instantly became bestsellers.

They were sold under the name of their original manufacturers Meccano, the Frank Hornby firm also well known for its electric trains.

In April of 1934 they were called Dinky Toys, because it is said that boys would refer to them as 'Dinkys'.

By 1941, when production temporarily ceased because of the Second World War, over sixty sets and series had been issued, each containing up to eight separate items. More than one thousand different subjects have been modelled, mostly transport-related; they include cars, vans, lorries, buses, trains, military and farm vehicles, aircraft, ships and figures.
