Applying Top Coat Exterior Painting Preparing Substrate

All aspects are undertaken from new shells requiring their first paint job to older boats wanting a repaint or new identity.

From a simple one or two colour design to a full working boat replica - all aspects are catered for.

A build up of paint on boats ensures the elements are kept away from the substrate, thus ensuring longevity.  The average repaint involves removing rust and treating the exposed steel, filling any areas to maintain a level surface and applying  a primer. Undercoats are applied next, in the appropriate colours, ensuring all paint layers are keyed to each other.  Next comes an undercoat/gloss mix to prepare for the final coats of gloss paint.

Andy uses machine flatting techniques and hand flatting (wet and dry) to ensure a near perfect finish.  Coach lines, hand rail detail and traditional artwork on hatches all add to the overall appearance of a traditional looking Narrowboat.

The preferred paint system Andy is currently using consists of a 1 pack polyurethane which is cross linked with a zip hardener to produce an extremely tough and durable paint system.  The paint products are supplied by a locally based paint manufacturer to Andy's specification.  This, together with the fact that the paint can be used with or without the hardener, ensures fast access to any paint colour enabling Andy to supply customer touch up samples quickly and easily.

One area on a narrowboat that is continually marked and scratched is the gunwale side area.  Over the years Andy has developed a Taylor made, fast drying paint system that is easily applied with brush or roller for this area.  It produces a satin finish ensuring the gunwale always looks good and is protected.

Every boat repaint needs to be priced individually as the initial condition of a boat dictates how much preparation of the surface will be needed.  Extensive preparation of the surface is the key to a top quality paint job.  The work involved at this stage is where the bulk of the overall cost of the job is incurred.  Michael Caine says he acts for nothing but charges for sitting about on set; the same could be said for Andy’s boat painting, the glossing he does for free, the preparation he charges for.

Andy is happy to undertake private or trade work as required.  A number of his trade regulars include: Braidbar Boats, Warble Narrowboats, Orchard Marine, Nantwich Canal Centre and Venetian Marine.
