Rule
number 1. In the busy seasons ( June through August) and on national holidays
reserve your room ahead
of your journey. After a great day out and arriving in town after dark there's
nothing more stressful than to find
all accommodation displaying the NO VACANCY signs.
Panic sets in, tempers flare, money becomes no object.
Freestyle
motoring vacations are terrific the 'go where and when you like' freedom is
what its all about and this
works
out most times but beware peak holiday seasons. If you haven't booked ahead
then try to get booked in
during
the afternoon or at least early evening, this is usually possible and it leaves
you free to go out and enjoy
a Southwest sunset. . . nothing like it!
Accommodation of all standards is usually available from the luxurious
through to the 'cheap and cheerful'
Well known names such as Best Western, Days Inn, Super 8, Motel 6, Rodeway Inn
and many more are to be
found most every town near an attraction. Try to pick up one of their
directories before you set off on your tour.
There is also Bed & Breakfast and Ranch style accommodation to
be found.
On a budget ?. Don't judge a motel by its exterior (unless its decrepit)
often the rooms are clean and the bed,
comfortable. OK so the wallpaper dates back to the 1940s. . . just adds a little
atmosphere ! After all its just
somewhere to sleep, its the great outdoors that you're there for soon as that
sun peeps through the shutters.
A
better way to judge motels is by the state of the vehicles parked outside. If
they're immobile wrecks.. beat it!
Remember
. . ask to see a room if you are not sure. You'll soon get the picture.
ARIZONA:
Suggested towns to stay: Flagstaff - Williams -Tusayan- Sedona
- Cottonwood - Holbrook -Page
Budget:
Williams on route 66 - East Route66 Flagstaff. (either is good for Grand Canyon).
UTAH:
Suggested
towns to stay: Kanab - Panguitch - Ceder City -Springdale
Budget:
Kanab - Panguitch.
Keep an eye out for small roadside motels when you are near your destination.
Food:
America
, home of fast food and much of it is very good as is the service. There
are places to eat to suit all pockets
and
usually close to your lodgings. For convenience there are the well known chain
establishments such as Dennys
Cocos,
International House of Pancakes, Sizzlers, Wendys, Fudruckers, too many to mention
. Some Hotels/Motels
have their own restaurants in house. Typically if you find a bunch
of Motels, you will find a cafe close by.
Budget:
A very cheap and pleasant way to eat is to buy cooked food from the local supermarkets
and take it back to
your
room with whatever beverage you prefer. Your lodging will most likely have a
drink vending machine if not there
will certainly be one close by.
In
the restaurant always ask if there is a 'special' on the menu, often very good
value.
