25 March 2006 6s (H)
Won 4 - 2 (Kevin, Winny 2, Sebby) |
| The
end of term friendly was as it should have been but much closer than the
score suggests, with a well organised, positive and speedy 6s team giving
our experienced defenders (total age for 4 = more or less 250) a few
scares in a much enjoyed encounter. In fact had we not supplemented our
side with the occassional Parker and the odd JP we might not have been one
goal ahead when Sebby smashed home our 4th with the last hit of the game.
We went behind
quite early and for 15 minutes or so did not really look capable of
pulling the goal back: but then Chris combined well with Kevin who struck
with precision to equalise. An injury to KevF, struck in the head by
the oppo keeper's stick, left our midfielder looking like Terry Butcher
and to a makeshift rearrangement of the team while he composed himself. It
also lead to the surprise introduction of The Skipper and the
rearrangement that won us the game. Winny - new nickname
"Showboat" - asked for a run up front and within 20 minutes
rewarded The Skipper's faith with a brace of goals that put us in the
clear. Needless to say Showboat was subbed before he could do
further damage to the reputation of old people everywhere. When will he
put his cardie on and spray the roses?
The 6s pulled one
back and put us under quite a bit of pressure with some good hockey -
everything about their performance from the pre-match warm-up to the
post-match handshakes was a credit to Geoff - but we weren't in a mood to
leak goals, with Hutch overcoming a long SOFA to show great form at the
back, and held on for a result we just about deserved. |

18 March 2006 Harpo 4s (H) Lost
1 - 4 (www) |
| Objective
achieved: we successfully docked in 4th spot and should play Harpenden
again next term. But on this display we will have to improve to hold our
own: they were rather good. In some ways this was a game reminiscent of
last season - too many subs to build a winning performance - on the other
hand the game was lost early before The Skipper started tinkering.
Funny opening to
the game - we gave the impression of dominating after a string of shorts
which we just could not squeeze home. But when Harpo broke they did so
with pace and power, and seemed to catch Jack napping to take the lead
after 10 minutes. From here they took charge and were 3 - 0 up before Alec
decided to switch to sweeper and shut the door left by the positive-minded
Ray. This and the introduction of super-sub Simmo, stemmed the tide
although Alec was missed in midfield as was the ever improving KevF who
was obliged to join Kevin up front. But we were now in the game again and
www missed a stroke - perhaps harshly awarded as Ray forced the ball under
a prostrate keeper - and could have had another.
The second half
continued in somewhat of a party atmosphere, with subs rolling on and off
- including a 5s debut for Young Tom - which was a bit of a pity because
our opponents were in no mood to take us lightly and increased their lead.
However we did manage to score a cracking little goal popped in by www
after he had set Kevin free and received a precision pass in return. |

11 March 2006 Berko 4s
(A) Lost 0 - 4 |
| It's
always tough to blame one bloke but the unavailable Sebby would have made
all the difference in this game. Well, let's be honest Mitch would have
been useful up front too. But the point is there was not four goals
between these teams, with Cocky having his best game of the season despite
turning up with two left hockey boots and KevF outshining him as his
centre half partner, we played some good stuff despite a weakened line up,
and could well have left Berko still uncertain of 2nd place in the
division.
For the first 10
minutes we looked the better team, dominating play and winning a shortie
from which Ray was amazed to see a defensive stick deny him a goal.
However a long ball from the home side found an old-fashioned goal-hanger
unmarked and he slipped the
ball past Jack and we were on the back foot. After 20 minutes we were
three down and under the cosh, a crushing defeat on the cards, but
gradually we clawed our way back into the game and the second half - a
glorious flick from a shortie to close the scoring apart - was dominated
by some brave and imaginative attacking play not only from our improvised
midfield, but also from Ray, Hutch, DH and the show-boating Winny all of whom pressed
forward with purpose, leaving Jack to make some good saves to deny Berko
on the break.
Yet again a
depleted outfit came away from a heavy defeat to a top side with a great
deal of pride having been involved in a very sporting and hard fought
encounter. The only casualty was Winny's stick the head of which landed 30
yards from the rest to
provide a great 2nd half comedy moment. And one of the great pluses was the effect
the experience may well have had on Chris who played with great heart and enthusiasm
throughout. THE FOLLOWING DAY HE WAS SUCCESSFUL AT THE FINAL COUNTY U11
TRIALS AND IS NOW PART OF THE COUNTY SQUAD. Well done Chris. Shandy
pulled off a "shock to everyone but The Skipper" win at
Broxbourne and are now only a point ahead of us in the race to avoid
promotion. |
| Sat
4 March 2006 West Herts 6s
(H) Won 2 - 1 |
| Yet
again we didn't know how to lose and hard work, tenacity and a brace of
well struck Sebby shorties early in the game gave us a win over a lively,
albeit mouthy, side who had held us to two draws this term and needed the
points in a fight against relegation they seem now to have lost.
The game was
competitive rather than good and much of it was scrappy, but the
experiment of playing Ray at right link is working and we did play some
good hockey especially when he combined with www and KevF, who has come of
age since The Battle of Broxbourne (thankfully not too literally in this
aged team) and did a good job as the "legs" of his older
colleagues. WHerts pulled a goal back before halftime but partially
because of some extrovert and effective keeping from JP and partly because
of their lack of ambition, they did not really look likely to get what
they wanted from the game. For some reason (perhaps they were frightened
of the pace shown by Kevin and Mitch?) they did not seem to want to attack
us in numbers - Berko, our opponents next week, have shown that is the way
to beat us - and even, for a substantial spell in the second half, allowed
our patient build up to peg them back.
We are now
assured of at least 4th place but can still avoid promotion if Shandy take
a point or more from a visit to Champions Broxbourne. In fact, should we
really want it, no one could deny us the runners up spot (and a place in
Europe?) for two wins in the last two games.. ...... |
| Sat
25 February 2006 Broxbourne 6s
(A) Lost 0 - 6 |
| We
really did not need this sort of upheaval against the undisputed
champions, needing just these 3 points to clinch the title. Of the 10
players who started this game only Ray - at sweeper rather than his now
favoured midfield spot - had started the Shandy game last week. He was joined by 7
regular 6s, Kevin returning to play at centre half (a position he had never heard of
but one he took to like a duck to water) and The Skipper, short of
match practice to say the least.
The first 20 minutes was the most satisfying 5s
spell of the season. We actually held them at bay. There was a few minutes
when we thought - and perhaps this was the mistake we made - that we could
deny them a win. It was not to be: we conceded two in quick succession,
welcomed Cocky after an horrific journey from an umpiring assignment in
Bedford, and then reached the relief of the halftime break. Another heroic
spell of defending was ended by another brace of goals and, as we finally
flagged, two more near the end. Not once did we get the ball into their D,
rarely did we get it into their half, never did we stop trying to play, at
no time did we stop being a united thorn in the champion's side, nor did
we fail to come up with a new hero in every minute.
The 6s players
(who were all a credit to Geoff) are used to selecting a "Man of the
Match" - something the 5s haven't taken to - so let's run through the
contenders. All 4 5s debutants - Mick, great stops, great potential for a
newcomer to the game, Jack, fantastic tackling and concentration from a
young lad playing left-back against a good team who attacked constantly
down the right, Terry who ran and covered and ran again and the diminutive
Dan who showed delightful touches as our lone forward. Nigel, who
whenever the chance came to tackle hard took it and arrived at the top of
the D before the ball at some shorts, is in the running, as is Chris who
insisted on making the most of the few passes he had and KevF who
brought a lump to The Skipper's throat with his indefatigable spirit and
covered every square inch of the pitch - admittedly in two half-sized
bites. Ray was superb: but then he just had to be.
Elsewhere results
mean that (a) we cannot be relegated (b) Shandy can pip us for 3rd place
and (c) we could end up battling Harpenden for 4th place in the final
league game of the season. But it will be a nail biter. Try
picking a hole in The Skipper's planning if you dare. |

18 February 2006 Shandy 4s (A)
Drew 6 - 6 (Pinger 3, Tone 2, Seb) |
| We
just cannot find that losing streak we so badly need to stay in SW8. The
trouble is these boys just will not lie down. Boys? Eight of the starting
line up were over 50: keeper Jack aside, the whole squad was over 40 with
an average above 55. The oppo average must have wiped 25 if not 30 years
off that. But which team stuck at it longer, who finished stronger, who
fought back hardest?
Two goals down
within 10 minutes it looked like a hiding for us, and those annoying,
taunting tossers - on and off the pitch - were beginning to get to us. We
started a come back when Pinger smashed home a rebound from Seb's shortie
shot. And then invention was born out of necessity as makeshift midfielder
Ray forced the ball through for makeshift striker Tone to pop home. But we
were behind again just before halftime and shortly after it Shandy again
had a two goal advantage. Pinger then weaved through to give Tone an empty
net which he filled with aplomb, but once more we conceded too quickly.
Now we felt we could start taking a few more chances with Alec pulling the
strings in the middle, Ray pressing down the right and Cocky the left, and
we looked good value when Pinger smashed home a loose ball to make it 5 -
4 and score our 50th league goal of the season.
But we were
stretched at the back and Jack - who made a lot of good saves - was
unlucky when he saved at full length a shot which was probably going wide,
only to see the lose ball swept into the goal. We were still winning
shorts and Pinger fired in one of these just before The Skipper inserted
himself to replace the injured Tone and put the seal on creditable 6 - 5
defeat. All of this misfired when Sebby rattled the backboard from a
shortie and nearly went horribly wrong when Pinger hit the post in the
last minute. We would have gone above Berko into second place.
This was Pinger's
forth hat-trick in his four games for us and some people - opposition and
elsewhere in the club - don't know quite what to make of that. But today
he made a lot of old men very happy as well as a few happy men feel very
old. Yes, he actually bought a jug. |
| Sat
11 February 2006 W Hill & Enfield 4s (H)
Lost 3 - 5 (Seb 3) |
| We
ended up with a team far too heavyweight for what was basically a bunch of
kids. Perhaps that was literally true - our 100% over-40s side was no
match for a team that moved too fast and too often for us. Despite taking
a two goal lead inside 10 minutes we lost for the first time since we last
played our visitors - in November.
In many ways
however it was a battle of short corners - all 8 goals came this
way. Seb blasted home two early on but gradually we came under
pressure and conceded far too many shorties: not even the impressive frame
of KevO could stop us from falling behind by halftime. Seb equalised early
in the second half and for a spell it was anybody's game but the away side had more in
reserve and it required some good work from JP to keep us on terms. When
we conceded shorts their more experienced players were called forward
to, quite deservedly, polish us off.
On the positive
side, Cats turned out and had another great game, despite trying to get away with murder,
Kevin returned in good form and Simmo was looking more active than he says
he is. And we're still on course for 4th place. On the other hand
Ray's comeback stumbled on a knock and DH is suffering from a bit of
a pull.
Finally a message
from Cocky on the defeat: "You can't blame me. I wasn't playing. I
just stood at left half and watched you lose the game". The great
question remains unanswered: why does the ball gravitate to the opposite
side of the pitch to Cocky? Don't bother to answer that one. |

4 February 2006 Stortford (A)
Won 5 - 1 (Cats 3, Mitch, KevF) |
| You
never know with Cats. For a start will he turn up? It was a nice
surprise to see him at Stortford on Saturday morning and, with Simmo still
injured and The Skipper forced to umpire after Winny guided a carload via
Royston, even more pleasing to see him jump at the chance to captain the
side. And what a great job he did prompting, guiding and encouraging
Mitch, Chris and KevF, all of whom will have learnt a lot. Oh - he scored
a hat-trick as well.
After comfortably
surviving 15 minutes with 10 men we were able to put more into attack when
www arrived and despite a fairly even half were 2 - 0 up at the break,
Cats having carefully placed two lifted shots although the second probably
went further than it should. We played well for a long spell after the
break and scored two good goals: the first a Cats solo (but KevF had a
crucial touch in the middle of the dribble) finished from a near
impossible angle and then a delightful reverse chip from Mitch. Eventually
the home side awoke and put us under some pressure, only to be held up by
the ferocity of Nigel's tackling and an all round competent defensive
performance from the old masters. They did beat Jack to reduce the arrears
but KevF popped up to score his first league goal and ensure we finished
the game with a comfortable margin.
Ray returned for
his first full game since 19 November and it was great to see him as
defensively commanding as ever, and even better to see him stay around for
a couple of beers. |

28 January 2006 Harpo (A)
Won 3 - 1 (Seb, Cats, Peter) |
| A
few phone calls and a cancelled school match turned an injury hit team
into a mean fighting unit within an hour early on Saturday and a potential
banana skin into a good win.
On a cold, bright
morning the home side were first out of the blocks and in the opening 10
minutes unlucky not to add to the 13 goals they scored in their previous
two games. But for some reason they insisted on attacking through the
middle where Fez and Cats were in great form and Sebby was able to
pick off their runners. Gradually we were able to bring Peter and Henry
into the game and to test Harpo's outstanding young keeper, who blocked
Peter's shortie shot but had no chance when Sebby lifted the rebound over
him for our first. Peter scored the second, again from a short, before the
lead was reduced following a quick break out of defence that could well
have been halted by the correct umpiring decision.
The second half
again produced early lively attacks from the blues but once more we
asserted ourselves and wasted a number of well won shorties. It was
a rare Harpo short that nearly changed the game when Hutch stopped with
his stick but saw the ball jump up and brush his knee: Jack saved the
stroke and the momentum which could have swung to the opposition stayed
with us. With 5 minutes to go we at last used Cats at a short and he swept
the ball high into the net to ensure the rarity of The Skipper making a
full appearance in a winning team.

| Sat
21 January 2006 Berko (H)
Won 5 - 3 (Brownie 3, Seb, Cats) |
| Some
Skippers never learn. Three nil up at half-time (two from Brownie, one a
subtle bobbler, and a blaster from Seb) the team were warned of
complacency but The Skipper could not resist tinkering with the side. Seb
was striking fear into the oppo whenever he ran at them from midfield:
moved to sweeper to give the dominant Tommo a run. Loll deceptively hard
working in the middle moved to the back to rest the injured but
still solid Simmo. Brownie, always likely to score, gave way to Mitch who
had looked so sharp during his first half run. Cats was introduced for his
first appearance for a few weeks to recapture a midfield we had started to
lose.
Within 10 minutes
the score was 3 - 2 and a repeat of the turn around at Berko was on
the cards.
However Tommo
switched himself with Loll to tighten things at the back and Cats got the
measure of the game. Although Berko were now throwing everything at us -
and Jack was called on to make some good saves - we extended our lead when
just the threat of bringing Brownie back saw Cats expertly convert www's
reverse pass on a shorty. By then we were creating numerous chances on the
break - with Mitch unlucky on two occasions when pulled back by a whistle
for us - and www was able to pick out the re-introduced Brownie at the end
of a Cats inspired move to complete his hat-trick.
Great to have Ray
back in an umpiring role which he filled with fault-free aplomb. |
| Sat
14 January 2006 West Herts 6s (A)
Drew 2 - 2 (Brownie, Seb) |
| Back
to league action with a tough game and fortunate to call on a few old
friends as we were short of some regulars. JP harried like a demon, Tom
stopped everything and tackled strongly, Loll showed class and worked
hard, and Brownie gave us what he always does - a goal. That put us back
in the game before halftime after a home team showing great movement and
good skills had taken a two goal lead before Hutch was introduced to marshal
the defence.
We were pressed
back in our own half for most of the second period but Jack was only
called upon to make 3 saves, and it took just one shortie from Sebby -
smashed home with typical power - to enable us to snatch a point which
hard work all over the pitch had earned for us. Many thanks to Marnit who,
nearly all players of both sides agreed, did a great job of blowing
virtually single handed.

7 January 2006 Saffron Walden 6s (H) -
Friendly Drew 1 - 1 (Tel) |
| We
continued our entertaining break from league action pitted against a
talented young Walden outfit who could easily have beaten us. With
Jack missing we were lucky to have JP in goal but unlucky that he did not
turn up in time to save The Skipper the embarrassment of conceding the
opening goal as kicking back - or should that be failing to kick back? We
clawed our way into the game and equalised through a familiar route - a
Sebby shortie - this time Tel got a final touch that may well have been
needed and may even have been intended. |
| Sat
17 December 2005 St Ives 5s (A) Friendly
Won 5 - 3 (Pinger 3, Seb, KevF) |
| A
pleasant interlude from league action against a young, talented and
sporting side who were unable to find an answer to Pinger's goals - a
shorty and a couple of fine individual efforts - although our defence was
in a seasonally generous mood on a couple of occasions. Seb struck a
shorty superbly and KevF finished neatly - his first hockey goal - to
provide the other scores in a game we looked in no danger of losing
despite conceding the first goal. It was great to have Hammy - solid
throughout - and Fez - the epitome of effort - turning out for us |
| Sat
10 December 2005 Broxbourne 6s (H)
Won 5 - 3 (Pinger 3, Seb, Mitch) |
| Another
tough game against a very good team with a pacey midfield who put us under
pressure for much of the game, but we were ready for them with our own
brand of pressure and many strong performances - notably where it mattered
in both Ds. Pinger, aided by young Mitch, was deadly in their area and
Georg and Seb, both superb, performed miracles in ours. In between Cats,
again outstanding, and Tommo, cultured until he pulled up lame in the last
quarter, kept the engine room purring. We needed our "big guns"
today and they didn't let us down. But don't underestimate the dogged
contribution of our "back 3" , up against far younger opponents
but applying themselves well.
The key to the
win was an opening spell in which we took a two goal lead from our first
two shorties - first Pinger stopped for Sebby and then dummied to score
himself. Before and after that the visitors had good chances and it was
inevitable they would pull one back, but our momentum was forward and when
Will's run opened a gap for Cats he feed Pinger whose finish made sure we
had a two goal lead at halftime. A solo from Pinger put us 4 - 1 up but
the Badgers did not deserve that and gradually clawed their way back into
the game with 2 goals and constant pressure, sensing blood when Tommo
limped off. It was left to Mitch, who had a super second half, to pounce
after a full length stop by their keeper and save us from what would have
been a very nervous last 5 minutes.
The downside
again was short tempers, dodgy tackles and umpire criticisms (Marnit and
JP did a great job by the way). Not all of this is down to us but today
most of it was. We must learn to focus ALL of our efforts on winning the
game; although on this occasion 80% was good enough. |
| Sat
3 December 2005 Shandy 4s (H)
Won 4 - 2 (Pinger 4) |
| Can
we play under lights at Nobel every week? We revenged our pasting at
Shandy with a power performance in a highly charged atmosphere, and while
it is unfair to pick out an individual when the whole team played so well,
there's no doubt the introduction of one player made all the difference
after the dismal showing in Enfield. He showed hard work, skill and
patience whether leading the attack or playing deeper, and ensured a
strong Shandy side never settled. It was great to have Cats
back.
Other
performances worth mentioning: Jack made a great save in each half, Tone
kept an effective eye on the East League's leading scorer, DH gave a great
impersonation of DaveBoy, Seb was a tower of strength, Simmo lead by
example, Will & Mitch showed courage as well as delicate skills and
Fez & Kevin both impressed on their 5s debuts.
Each half
followed a similar pattern as we tested a good opposition keeper only to
concede on the break, come back with two goals and finish in control.
Tempers flared occasionally as Shandy, like us on 15/10, clearly did not
like being on the receiving end and, as in the earlier game, a visiting
player was yellowed near the end. But the game was generally well marshaled
by The Duchess and her young colleague. |
| Sat
26 November 2005 W Hill & Enfield 4s (A)
Lost 0 - 1 |
| In
terms of hockey quality, the worst game we have had this season, and
in terms of dissatisfaction with a shoddy and lackluster performance by
far the most disappointing result. Much younger than us the opposition
gave us plenty of room to make experience tell but throughout the game we
failed to do the basics, especially passing and taking up useful
positions, at all well. The goal that beat us was scrambled home from a
short corner midway through a second half in which we somehow contrived to
play even more poorly than in the first.
High spots were
the efforts of Mitch and DH, perhaps the only two of our players to come
away from the game with credit, and a solid debut in goal from Lee.
Overall a cold, damp miserable afternoon for us. |
| Sat
19 November 2005 Stortford 6s (H)
Won 1 - 0 (Kevin) |
| In
terms of hockey quality, by far the best game we have had this season, and
in terms of satisfaction for a job well done by far the best result.
Stortford were much stronger than they were 7 weeks ago and came forward
brightly in the first quarter: not the best period for our defence but it
gave Georg some early action and we came through with goal in tact.
Prompted by Alec we gradually clawed our way into the game and took the
lead with a goal that owed much to the persistence of umpire Amanda.
Spotting Marnit's pass stopped by a defenders foot when her colleague did
not, she continued to signal for a short until he gave it, quite a few
seconds later. Cocky's shot took a double deflection before hitting the
backboard and he was gracious enough (how often is that said?) to concede
the goal to Kevin's last touch.
With Tone and
Winny, who both had great games, needing to rest up for evening
festivities - poor old fellas - we were perhaps lucky to have Tariq and
Tel to call on and we looked the better side after half-time, but by then
the game was won. There was no way Ray and Georg were going to concede a
goal, as our keeper proved with a superb save late in the game to
ensure his first 5s clean sheet. |
| Sat
12 November 2005 Harpenden 4s (H)
Won 4 - 3 (Seb 3, Cats) |
| A
goal behind, then a Sebby hat-trick - it was deja-vu all over again (see
last week) but we held things together much better this week and dug deep
to fend off a strong fight back from opposition who perhaps didn't deserve
to lose this one.
The goal against
after 5 minutes was silly - everyone missed a long corner except the guy
standing 5 yards in front of Jack: he took the chance well. Sebby's
three first half goals were all firmly hit shorts, reflecting the pressure
we put them under - much coming from Cocky's skilful turns and firm
passing. Sebby was making life hard for their midfield with constant harassment.
At half-time an
unplanned change was forced as Ray limped out of the game, Sebby switched
back to sweeper and the subtle skills of Cats were introduced into
midfield. Another half-time change was more deja-vu - for the second
successive week an oppo player turned into an eccentric umpire. We
came under more pressure now and the visitors narrowed the gap with a well
worked goal but again a shortie restored our advantage: this time Seb
fluffed it but managed to work the ball to Cats who sent a delightful lob
into the far corner. Harpenden came back strongly and their young midfield
looked good: at times some desperate defending was required (welcome back
Nigel!) but we conceded only a well struck shortie and held on for the
points.
Will and Mitch
showed excellent touches throughout and the whole squad worked hard for
the win, which puts us mid table with 3 wins, 3 defeats and one draw,
after the first round of games. |
| Sat
5 November 2005 Berko 4s (A)
Lost 4 - 7 (Seb 3, Will) |
|
We
are still trying to understand how we were trounced in a game we
controlled until halftime. A quick and rare break saw us go behind after
10 minutes but two solo efforts from stand-in midfielder Sebby, both
superbly finished, were just reward for first half hard work and effort
from a team again missing a number of "regulars". After the
break the signs were ominous as Berko took to attacking in numbers down
the wing defended by The Skipper and seemed to be doing a man-to-man job
on Seb, but we soon extended our lead thanks to a well worked shortie
routine which used Ray to set up Sebbie's third.
Suddenly
we were under the cosh and conceded three goals in quick order, having no
answer to the strong running of their younger midfield players and hard
hitting of the older ones. We battled back and Will capped a fine debut on
grass with his first goal for the 5s to equalise. But again Berko came
back and despite good saves from Jack added three more.
The
fireworks started in the midst of the second half goalrush. The Berko ump
(a player in the first half - never a good idea) took exception to a
collision which sandwiched the Berko centre forward between Ray and
Daveboy
(an unwise place to be) and the whistler laid down the law. Both captains
were warned in the strongest terms that ".. any more of that
....". 10 minutes later and goaded by persistence from our
midfielder, a Berko player hit out wildly and struck Seb's legs. The
obvious follow up - theatricals from Seb and a chorus of righteous
indignation - culminated in a red card for the Berko man. Not the sort of
thing we want in SW8.
Rob
had a very promising debut showing exceptional effort and good
spirit.

29 October 2005 West Herts 6s (A)
Drew 3 - 3 (Cocky, Cats, Kevin) |
|
A
depleted Stevenage team came up against top of the table West Herts and
for the first 20 minutes it looked like a mismatch with much younger
opposition slicing through the
Stevenage
midfield and defence with Seb at sweeper and goalkeeper
Jack Dingley
working hard to limit the damage to just three goals.
We
then started to string some
moves together with
Mitch and
Kevin
combining well with good support from
www
to put the opposition under pressure. The arrival of
Cats
as a midfield sub and Will moving to left midfield kept the pressure up
and a great move down the left side saw
Mitch
and
Kevin combining to set up Cocky for a chance that unfortunately was struck
hard into the corner of the goal. The first half finished with more
Stevenage pressure and several short corners which
West Herts
did well to resist.
The
second half was practically one way traffic as we maintained the pressure
but some fine saves from the
West Herts
keeper and several goal line clearances at short corners denied them the
quick goal. Eventually the pressure told and
Cats
flicked home a short corner.
West Herts
made several breakaways that Seb dealt with expertly with
Jack
also making a crucial save. Further attacks with Will working well with
Mitch
produced more short corners for us and eventually a skilfull routine
involving Seb and
Cats
got the ball to
Kevin
to deflect home for the equaliser.
We
had further chances to snick the win but a draw was the fairest result. |

22 October 2005 Broxbourne 6s (A)
Lost 0 - 1 |
| Again we
showed how much we miss Brownie. Surely he would have found a way to nick
a goal from a home defence which did not look too good but on the day had
little, with all due respect to Kevin's solo efforts, to test them. And
with Georg dominating his D and fully justifying the airfare from
Frankfurt behind Ray in vintage form and Daveboy as dogged as ever, the
Badgers were never going to get many goals. The only return they had for
constant pressure exerted by a young and skilful midfield was from a
shortie after about 10 minutes.
All the team worked extremely hard and heads never went
down - although there is perhaps one dissenting voice to this view - and
we could well have nicked a point when Kevin's centre took a massive
deflection and produced an outstanding save. |

15 October 2005 Shandy 4s (A)
Lost 1 - 5 (Cocky) |
| Having lost
players to illness, house building, county duty, push-back timing and
other teams the last thing we wanted was strong oppo - and what did we
get? A Shandy team unrecognisable from any we have played before and a
pretty good one. Having persuaded Tone to join young Callum up front (and
his mother needed a bit of persuading to let him play with the big boys)
and talked Winny out of retirement The Skipper found the job of midfield
dynamo way beyond him and soon lost the plot. However the rest of the team
defended well in the first half and 0 - 2 could have been a lot
worse.
In the absence of a leader the defence decided on
all-out attack for the second half and chances came at both ends. But many
more fell to Shandy who had the forwards to take 3 of them despite saves
from Jack. Three minutes from time Sebby was involved in an altercation
while on a run down the right wing (he was playing stopper) and was
yellowed. Almost immediately we won a shortie and, in the absence of Seb,

8 October 2005 Winchmore Hill 3s (H)
Won 4 - 0 (Brownie, Kevin, Mitch, Loll) |
| Not
as good a performance as the previous week but luckily it was not needed
against very young and energetic opposition. We started brightly with
William, Laurie and Mitch working hard in mid field to get the ball to
Brownie and Kevin who caused the oppos defence lots of problems. The early
pressure paid off with Kevin persevering to squeeze the ball over the
line. The oppo bounced back but Seb and Dave Boy were equal to the
challenge and Jack in goal did not have to touch the ball for the whole
half. Unfortunately up front Stevenage were not making the most of
their chances with Kevin having an attack of footitis and even Brownie
missing a couple of chances he would have converted 9 times out of 10.
After more of the same for the first 15 minutes of the second half we at
last strung some flowing moves together with William delivering some
intelligent passes. A quickly taken Cocky free hit found Mitch on the far
post and he gleefully swept the ball home. |
| The
oppos heads went down and Stevenage dominated the rest of the game. The
third goal came from the best move of the match with good interplay
between Cocky, William and Kevin delivering the ball to Brownie to push
into a nearly open goal. The scoring was wrapped up with a Laurie
deflection into the back board of a high short corner hit from Seb, a
dubious decision from the home umpire. Stevenage’s dominance allowed
Phil Hutch to make some surging runs down the right wing from defence with
the oppos rare attacks snuffed out by some solid defence from Seb, Dave
Boy and DH. |

Bishops Stortford 6s(A) Won 2 - 0 (Brownie 2) |
A
strong performance from Stevenage 5s gave them a comfortable 2- 0 win away
to an experienced Stortford 6s in Div SW8. Everyone played a part, with
the 5s rarely in danger of conceding and often looking likely to add to
one goal in each half from Brownie. A sustained run by Will gave Loll the
chance to set up his father for the first, and a powerful run followed by
a pin-point cross from Kevin provided the second.

Letchworth 5s (A) - Friendly Lost 5 - 4 (Brownie 2, Kevin,
www) |
| Acting
Skipper Simmo had a clear view of this game: he said "Jack was in
goal, Think Brownie got 2, Kevin at least one. Score was 5-4 loss after
being 1-0 ahead, 3-1 down at halftime, 4-1 down and 5-2 down during the
second half and had chances to nick the draw. DD injured after 5 mins and
loads of subs." |
