Brownie, hat-tricks against the old enemies .. JP, tenacity .. Will, goal .. Loll, MoM   ..  Shaun, goal  ..  Harp, goal .. Marnit, goal .. Ally, out for the season

Sat 25 March 2006   W Herts 5s (A) - Lost 1 - 6 (Sebby)
Stevenage had a good first half with the West Herts keeper making some very good saves.  We ended the first half 2-0 down with the score line not really reflecting the game.  The second half started well and for a while it looked like Stevenage had a chance, but a penalty flick was awarded after the ball hit a defenders (Jezz's) foot on the goal line off a short corner strike.  After the 3rd goal, our heads went down and West Herts. just seemed to run the goals in.  Seb scored our consolation goal from a short corner with only a few minutes to go.  A disappointing end to the season with the 4th team having a slight chance of finishing 3rd last and being relegated.

MOM: goes to Seb, who not only scored but also had a very good game and carried on until the end when everyone else's head had gone down.

Sat 18 March 2006   Ricky 4s (H) - Lost 1 - 2 (Shaun)
Going from a promotion battle to a relegation struggle in 7 days was always going to be tough and the 4s, despite dominating the game territorially, could not find enough to win this game as they should. Credit to Ricky who managed to snuff out Brownie, who had scored in each of the previous 7 games, restricting him to a couple of half-chances by man to man marking. They were also out very quick at shorts giving Sebby only enough time to pull back the hammer, not enough to squeeze the trigger. Although we switched to hitting out rather than dragging in the second half, this did not work and we we still could not make the most of the many shorts we did have: some variety is perhaps called for.

Inevitably, in a situation where one team is dominating play and desperate to score, the opposition hit them on the break and Ricky did that well, scoring once in each half. In reply Shaun scooped home a loose ball at a short in "extra time" in the first half.

Sat 11 March 2006   Shandy 3s (A) - Lost 1 - 2 (Brownie)
Our only very small chance of promotion rested in winning this game as Shefford & Sandy who were just above us in 3rd position in the league table.  The first half started well with both sides being evenly matched.  Brownie opened the scoring with a great goal, receiving the ball at the top of the D, he ran it in and flicked it over the keeper.

Stevenage dominated for the early part of the second half, but Shefford gained control and scored 2 goals.  Stevenage had a few chances, including a defender save from a short corner, but in the end were unable to pull it back.

MOM: goes to Laurie.  He had a great game, holding the middle and linking well with Webby.

Sat 4 March 2006   Bluetarts 5s (A) - Drew 2 - 2 (Brownie 2)
As usual Stevenage were a little slow to start, and were a bit scrappy and disorganised to begin with, being overrun by some young and very quick Blueharts players.  The meant we were down 2-0 at half time.  As usual we seemed to wake up after half time and started play as a team which dominated most of the second half.  Two good goals from Brownie put us level and we had a number of chances to go ahead.  In the last 5 minutes Blueharts scored a goal off a short corner but it was disallowed because the shot was outside the D and defected off a defenders stick.  This is the 3rd draw in a row and the third game when the team really gets going in the second half, so the sugar rush from eating chocolate at half time may be working.  This week we'll have to try eating chocolate before the game to see if it helps.

As usual everyone played well, especially in the second half, but notably Fez's hard work in middle and JP in defence.

MOM: this week, Shaun was voted for having a great game on the left, showing silky skills and good all-round play.

Sat 25 February 2006   WGC 4s (A) - Drew 4 - 4 (Brownie 3, Shaun)
After a tough week with a lot of the regular players playing for the 3's, the team started well but didn't quite gel and were over-run by WGC and finished the first half 2 - 0 down.

The second half really came together with Stevenage working as a team, turned the game around.  Shaun scored our first goal from a penalty flick which was awarded when Brownie took a short corner which hit a defenders leg.  Brownie then scored the next goal from a short corner and another goal from free play putting us 3 - 2 up.  WGC replied putting us at 3 - 3, Brownie then scored from another short corner, clinching his second hat-trick in 2 games.  In the last 2 minutes, Stevenage were unable to keep out a goal which resulted in Stevenage having another 4 - 4 draw in 2 weeks.

Everybody played exceptionally well with Mitch and Will linking up well on the right, Webby and Laurie had a great game in the middle and Shaun played well on the left.  In defence, Matt had a fantastic game at right back and Simmo was very solid as sweeper.  Nick, who normally doesn't play defence, did an excellent job at left back.  It was a great team effort and we were unlucky to draw.

MOM: goes to Brownie who has not only scored a goal a game since Christmas but since getting a new stick has scored 2 hat-tricks in 2 weeks. [is this deja-vu all over again? ....Ed]

Sat 18 February 2006   Letchworth 5s (H) - Drew 4 - 4 (Brownie 3, Shaun)
The first half started well with both sides having a few chances but Stevenage mostly in control of the game.  Brownie scored first but Letchworth responded ending the half at 1-1.  The second half started with Stevenage scoring another 3 goals early on.  Goals from Shaun, followed by Brownie single handedly running from the half way line and finishing off with a great goal, and completed with a hat-trick.  Stevenage thought they had it in the bag.  In the last 10 minutes, Stevenage lost composure, and weren't helped with a few questionable decisions that resulted in 4 short corners, Letchworth were able to score off 3 of them to end the game with a 4-4 draw.

MOM: goes to Brownie who had a great game including scoring a hat-trick

Sat 11 February 2006   Adelaide 4s (H) - Won 1 - 0 (Brownie)
Stevenage completely dominated the first half and caught Southgate on the break a few times.  Brownie and Mitch made a great run with Brownie beating the goalie and scoring from almost on the back line.   The second half started well for Stevenage, but after a few near misses they got complacent and lost their shape.  Southgate just missed a goal and hit the post from a short corner.  This got Stevenage back in the game but they were unable to put any more away.

MOM: Fez gets it this week for his incredible work rate and tenacious tackling.

Sat 4 February 2006   Bedford 5s (A) - Lost 1 - 4 (Brownie)
Stevenage played a very young, fast and energetic Bedford Town 5th team, with most of their youngsters playing in their under 18 A side.

We were unable to keep pace in the second half and went 2-1 down from a short corner.  Bedford kept up a relentless attack and Stevenage lost shape in the last 10 minutes and conceded 2 more goals.

Despite the score line, Stevenage didn't disgrace themselves and did very well against a fitter and quicker side, but eventually ran out of steam.   Everyone played very well, but special mentions go to Jack, who had a good game in goal.  Brownie for his fantastic goal.  Martin had a good game in defence, with a tough second half marking Bedford's very quick field player, from whom he suffering a lot of unchecked abuse, but in so doing managed to distract him from the game.  Lol did well despite not feeling or looking very well.  Harp and Shaun both played well despite niggling injuries.

MOM: goes to JP for his very sheer tenacity, and enthusiasm.  He had a good game in defence, made some great passes and put in some great tackles.

Sat 28 January 2006   Vauxhall 2s (H) - Won 3 - 0 (Harp, Brownie 2)
I started Saturday morning with 9 players and no goal keeper.  Thankfully Tim agreed to play in goal and a few extra players turned up to see if they could get a game.
We very started well with a goal from Harp in the first 2 minutes.  We completely dominated the first half , there were a number of near misses and 2 more goals from Brownie.
The second half started with a frustrated Vauxhall applying all the pressure.  A number of good saves from Tim and a few near misses only added to Vauxhalls frustration.  Things got a little heated towards the end and a small scuffle between the Stevenage goalie and a Vauxhall player resulted in 2 yellow cards being issued to both players.  JP stepped into the goal for a short corner with only a helmet, gloves and enthusiasm and did very well to keep it out.
MOM: A very difficult decision; Tim made some excellent saves, and Brownie scored two goals, but the player who exceeded expectations was Mitch.  He started the first half playing right half, but playing out of position meant he didn't do a very good job of marking.  In the second half he came on with a completely different attitude, marking and tackling superbly and even started telling other players to mark their players.  A complete transformation into a mid-field player.
Sat 21 January 2006   St Ives 5s (H) - Friendly Lost 0 - 3
4s played a friendly this week against St Ives 5's.  Stevenage were 1-0 down at half time and finally lost 3-0.
It was a fair & even game played in good spirit.  Stevenage had 3 decent shots at goal but were unable to get past St Ives's very good goal keeper.
Sat 7 January 2006   Saffron Walden 5s (A) - Friendly Won 4 - 2 (Brownie 3, Will)
This week the 4's performed admirably with an almost completely new team with only 5 regular players.  The first half was a very tense and well matched game ending 2-2 with Brownie scoring both goals.  The second half started badly with Stevenage just being attacked for 20 minutes until Brownie set up Will for the 3rd goal.  After that Stevenage completely dominated and Ian finished with a hat trick putting the final score at 4-2.  Ian gets MOM but everyone played well.  mentions go to Simmo and Hammy who were both solid at the back, and Fez played who had an excellent game and did allot of running despite not feeling well and looked like he couldn't walk afterwards.  This was Ian's first hat trick of the season and extends his position as overall top scorer.
Sat 17 December 2005    St Ives 4s (A) - Lost 1 - 3 (Will)
The 4s came up against a strong St Ives side but gave a good account of themselves despite losing Marnit to injury early in the game. Three youngsters more accustomed to older company in the 5s all did well. Will scored the consolation goal, Mitch had a hand in it and Jack was MotM.
Sat 10 December 2005    West Herts 5s (H) - Lost 0 - 3
Stevenage started with 10 men, due to one member of the team being hung over and sleeping through his alarm clock.  Thankfully Terry was available to help out at short notice, but that didn't stop West Herts scoring their first goal before he arrived.  With 11 men Stevenage dominated play but were unable to finish off their chances and before the half time conceded another goal from a short corner.  The second half started well but Stevenage just couldn't get back into the game and let their heads go down, and conceded another goal before the end.  Overall a disappointing result.
Sat 3 December 2005    Ricky 4s (A) - Drew 1 - 1 (www)
We really struggled for players and keepers this week.  Thanks to Martin for agreeing to play in goal, JP's mate Wayne who had not played hockey before, Webby and Rob for also helping out.  Stevenage started very well and completely dominated the first half but were unable to capitalise on a number of chances.  Webby finally scored off a great cross from Rob.

The second half started well but we started to allow Ricky to get back into the game, getting frustrated with the physicality and umpire decisions.  Martin proved that goal keepers can get a green card for sarcastic remarks.  Ricky equalised from a short corner and kept up the pressure until the end of the game.  It was a frustrating performance for a game we could so easily have won.

MOM: The mid-field did really well this week and Webby had an excellent game, but this week the mom goes jointly to Shaun and Lol

Sat 26 November 2005    Shefford & Sandy 3s (H) - Won 4 - 0 (Brownie 2, Shaun, Harp)
After last weekends lack lustre performance Stevenage produced a free flowing game of hockey, which saw a change in formation with three up front. Brownie scored Stevenage's first goal off a well taken short corner, with Shefford and Sandy chasing the game as they where caught numerous times on the break. On a day when Stevenage's short corner routines were working well, Shaun made the score 2-0 from the second short corner which took us to half time.

Either side of half time, Shefford & Sandy put the pressure on with Taff making a number of great saves. After Harp scored Stevenage's third goal and by far our best of the afternoon, off another well work short corner, Stevenage then proceed to dominate final 20 minutes of the game with Brownie finishing off a great team performance with our final goal.

MOM: This week man of the match was a tough choice with some great performances coming from Harp, Ally and Brownie upfront devastating our opponents defence. As well as Loll, JP and Tom having a solid match. The MOM goes jointly to Taff for some great saves and a clean sheet, and Matt for outstanding game in defence.

Sat 19 November 2005    Bluetarts 5s (A) - Lost 1 - 4 (Brownie)
Firstly I would like to start by congratulating Jeremy and Tracy on behalf of the entire team on the birth of healthy baby BOY named Henry. Now on to the hockey in what was a first half best forgotten, Stevenage lacked commitment and structure. This resulted in three unanswered first half goals from Blueharts.

The second half saw a much improved effort from Stevenage resulting in a number of short corners being awarded. Brownie scored a cracking goal from one of the resulting short corners and went agonizingly close only minutes later. At this stage Stevenage were back in the game, but Blueharts scored their fourth goal on the break and with that took all three points.

MOM: Loll for hard running game from midfield

Sat 12 November 2005    WGC 4s (H) - Won 6 - 0 (Brownie, Loll, Shaun (2), Harp, Geoff)
This was the best performance from the 4's this year so far and saw a concerted team effort convincingly beat WGC 6 - 0.  The first half saw a number of opportunities being created by some free-flowing attacking play resulting in the first goal by Shaun off a well worked short corner routine by Harp.  This was followed by a second goal by Loll deflecting a cross from

After half time, Welwyn started well but despite their best efforts, Stevenage showed some great movement which resulted in Shaun scoring the third goal off a cross from Harp.  From then on, Stevenage completely dominated the game resulting in a quick succession of goals starting with Harp putting away a cross set-up by Tom.  Welwyn conceded a penalty flick after a shot by

Sat 5 November 2005    Letchworth 5s (A) - Lost 1 - 2 (Harp)
Letchworth scored first from a short corner, but Harp soon equalised in what was quite a tough first half.
The second half started well but Stevenage were not able to capitalise on a few chances.
Letchworth scored a second goal early on which put the final score at 2-1.
Sat 29 October 2005    Adelaide 3s (H) - Won 2 - 1 (Brownie, Marnit)
We were two players short at the beginning of the game and were lucky to get Mouldy to double up for us at the last moment.  He had an excellent game and really strengthened our mid-field.  Despite playing with 10 men, we played an incredibly tight and disciplined game with Brownie scoring in the first half.  Martin then scored our second goal in the second half.  Unfortunately a penalty flick was awarded against us for a dangerous tackle which put the final score at 2-1.
Sat 22 October 2005    Bedford 5s (H) - Lost 4 - 6 (Brownie 2, Ally, Swifty)
The 4s looked like winners in the first half and with Swifty, Steve and Loll supplying Brownie and Ally and the strikers frequently bearing down on goal. But after Brownie goals had twice given them the lead a wide open defence allowed the visitors back on terms. After the break Bedford somehow put the lid on the Stevenage supply line and continued use an especially quick forward line to take advantage of a defence unable to mark them.

Swifty nicked in a "shot" from outside the area and Ally was persistent in earning a fourth but only after Bedford had drawn well ahead, Jack resorting to tough tackling to stop the final Bedford goal which came from the resultant stroke.

Sat 15 October 2005    Vauxhall 2s (A) - Won 3 - 2 (Brownie 2, Ally)
This week we really struggled for players and a keeper.  Thanks to Nigel for playing keeper, he did an admirable job.
Ally scored our first goal from a short corner, finishing off with a reverse strike.  Ian Brown scored the other two.  Loll forgot his boots and played in trainers, which resulted in him getting two massive blisters on each foot.  He played on throughout the second half and didn't complain.
There were long moments in the game when they put enormous pressure on us but fortunately, were unable to capitalise.  When we played simple attacking hockey we cut through them and finished off well.
Sat 8 October 2005    No game
Sat 1 October 2005     WGC (A) - Friendly Won 4 - 2  (Dan 2, Scotty 2)
On the 1st October Stevenage won 4 - 2 against WGC @ Herts. university campus in a friendly match
We had allot of younger players double up, arriving straight from a 3's game and just in time for pushback.  Fortunately their youth meant that they were not too tired to run in a few goals.  Dan and Scotty scoring 2 goals each.  WGC looked dangerous at times and managed to put 2 away, but on the whole Stevenage dominated the game
Sat 24 September 2005    Letchworth 4s (H) - Friendly   Drew 2 - 2 (Ally 2)
Ali scored two goals in our 2-2 draw against Letchworth 5's at JHN on Sat 24th. The goals had to be cobbled together out of spare bits of back board, which managed to hold together with a few cable ties and prayer, even with JP sitting on them for most of the game.
It was a pleasant game with both teams playing good constructive passing hockey.  Swifty & Truss dominated the mid-field, and Callum P was solid at the back.  Both teams had a few missed chances and it was a great start to the season.
