Media Premonition: From the
Diagram:
|
Paul and Tim were at school together in Shaw, Oldham. They did their first gig together as Media Premonition on Tim's 18th birthday at Paddy's Wigwam, supporting The Relatives - great pub rock band from Oldham. Media Premonition forecast the "End of Coronation Street" and said that its no use hiding underneath your kitchen table when the bomb drops because you won't be able to hide from the radiation - it's a "Physical Impossibility". From the Diagram never got beyond playing in front of friends in the front room during the holidays.

The Gallery Toffee
Apple Forest
|
Not long after arriving in Sheffield to go to University, Tim was recruited to local band The Gallery, playing psychedelic pop, including the marvellous "Constantine" and a song about 19th Century British Foreign Policy - "Mint Imperial". The Gallery metamorphosised into the Toffee Apple Forest to play some really off the wall stuff, including "God" a track picked up later by the Nihilistics. |

Media Premonition grew into a five piece band for a short time - only did one gig at the Hallamshire Hotel. Matt, the drummer, was never really into the band - he was using it as practice for bigger and better things (where is he now?). We opened with a rip roaring "Scapegoat" but stuttered a bit during some of the slower numbers. At about the same time, The Fuck City Shitters were born with a bang. Sheffield was covered in "FCS" graffiti overnight. FCS songs included the immortal "One Fuck and You're Dead" - about the threat of AIDS. The FCS were one of the best live bands in Sheffield at the time. Lou was a real showman, doing the old guitar behind the head stuff etc. When they split up, Lou recruited a new drummer, Rob, and got his brother Charlie on bass to form The Plague Dogs. Never quite as good as FCS. Rob currently doing Tarana, based mainly at The Red House on Solly Street.. Pete Fuck has a website of his own listing all the bands he has been in - over 35. The Ugly Americans was a concept of Ian Spence's (Sid Snot Ian). Went through a lot of changes over a couple of years, doing a few gigs, including "Battle of the Bands" at the Limit Club. Included here for completeness. Ian also put together the Company Classics compilation tapes, which included early Pulp tracks among others. |

The Atheist
Militia:
|
The Atheist Militia was formed on a Sunday, and performed on a Monday. Sadly we didn't record anything at the time. We didn't keep the name for very long before becoming the Nihilistics. At about this time, Paul was producing a compilation tape: Premonition Art Construct, featuring a number of local bands, including Pulp, the Bland, the Masons, the Gallery, and notably including tracks by T'Challa Grid and Tools You Can Trust. He also put on a series of gigs to promote it. |

The Nihilistics: Feral:
|
The first Nihilistics gig was at a Sheffield University Hall of Residence at an open stage night. The final Nihilistics gig was at Take 2 near Darnall. As it was the last gig, the bass guitar and the drum kit were both smashed up. After the Nihilistics split, various former Nihilie boys set up, or joined other bands. Feral did a small number of gigs. |

Iskra was a jazz funk band, played one anti-Poll Tax benefit gig but didn't last long. The woman singing had a fantastic voice. Too many political differences. Can't remember any of their last names. Rupert was a nice bloke, but his wife was an SWP robot. |
