I started painting in 1967. Until 1989 all of my work was carried out in oil, but since then I have concentrated on watercolour painting which I find to be more satisfying because of the planning which goes into each painting, also the technical side of making the paint go where I want it to go is a challenge I enjoy and you can believe me when I tell you that paint has a mind of its own.
I try to go out every weekend that I can with a camera. Usually I find that I will
keep the photographs lying around my studio for a long time sometimes even a few
years before I will find a way to use them as the basis of a painting. The photographs
that I take are not just of landscapes, but of old gateways and pieces of farm equipment,
even old chimneys.
It seems some days that I travel down every little country lane that my car will
fit. I love old cow sheds, farm buildings and the way the mood of the mountains changes
not only from season to season but sometimes within a matter of moments.
I enjoy painting light as it falls across the landscape. From the shadows of clouds skipping over the distant fields on a windy day to the deeper shadows of nearby trees and stone walls.
I have recently added some poetry to the site.
