The Instructors award in Surf Life Saving is a 'generic' award. Once you have completed your Instructor award in one award group you will become an Instructor in another award group once you have completed the pre-requisites.

In order to become an Instructor you will need to attain the following:-

bulletPre-requisites.
bulletBe a member of the Surf Life Saving Association of Great Britain (SLSAGB).
bulletHold or have held the right award (depends on award group).
bulletBe over 17 years old.
bulletAttend an Instructors Update
bullet At least once a year each Region within the SLSAGB will run an Instructors update.
bulletYou can attend any Course, it doesn't have to be the one in your Region.
bulletAll instructors (new and qualified) must attend this course at least once every 2 years.
bulletThis Course does not teach you 'how to instruct', it simply makes sure you are up to date on any changes to the skills and procedures.
bulletLearn to teach
bulletIf you have never taught before you will need to learn how.
bulletMost teaching qualifications will satisfy this requirement.
bulletLearning how to teach is best done within a Club under the guidance of an experienced Instructor.
bulletDemonstrate your ability.
bulletThis is done by presenting at least 2 candidates for awards (depending on which award group you are instructing).
bulletYou will have to do a lesson on the day of the exam. Generally you will be given the subject at the start of the exam and have to give a 5-10 minute talk half way through.

Please note: Holders of the RLSS Beach T/A award only need to 'Attend an update' and join the SLSAGB as they have already satisfied the other requirements.
