A brief history of the present Wragby & District Show
Now known as
"Wragby Show & Country Fayre"
"Written by the late Harry Bruntlett in 2003"
In July 1983 I was passing through West Torrington and decided to call at the Post office, a shop owned by Mr Gordon Allen assisted by Mary Philby. Mary came to serve me and during the course of our conversation I mentioned the Wragby Show - The last one being held in 1938.
She asked me all about it, so I told her that it consisted of Horse Showing and Jumping, Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, Mares and Foals and a Flower Show on the Vicarage lawn under a marquee. There was also dancing in the evening accompanied by a silver or brass band and fireworks were let off when it became dark enough.
When Gordon came home later, Mary told him what I had said about the show. Later that day Gordon and Mr Frank Dickinson came to see me and said "What about this show then ", I said "What about it?" The reply was "Shall we have a go at restarting it?" I said "Why Not?"
After a few days we arranged a meeting in the schoolroom in the Chapel, with all the interested people and we formed a committee. When they were told they could be held responsible for any loss that may occur - half of them dropped out! This left approximately 10 people, from whom we chose a Chairman - Mr Frank Dickinson, a Secretary - Mrs Christine Clay and Mrs Doreen Dickinson as Treasurer. Mr Les Thorne and I both put up £200 to start it off.
After a lot of hard work we put on a successful show on 1st October 1983. All the money was paid back, everything was paid for and a good balance to put in the bank. The rest as they say is History.
Out of all the original members, only two are still serving on the Committee - Mrs Janet Greenfield and me!
NB This years show is the 26th show
