John Quine, born 1824 (Level 5)

John Quine, born 1824 (died Braddan 21/11/1848)

Married 6/10/1844 Braddan
Mary Ann Cowley (Kewley) c1821 born Onchan
Children
  *Jonathan, born 06/02/1846 Braddan

John, aged 20 years, married Mary Ann in 1848. It is difficult to know her exact birth year as she recorded her age several times with different values. I believe the correct birth year to be about 1815, based on church christening records. She was the daughter of Ann (Teare) and Edward Cowley.

The couple’s only child Jonathan was born two years later. Unfortunately John died just 4 years after marrying Mary Ann. John was working at a local mine, probably extracting lead ore, when he was killed by an explosion.

After her husband’s death Mary Ann lived with her parents, working as a dressmaker. Her 65 year old father is recorded as a gardener in the 1851 census.

I found no record of Mary Ann’s death. She was not listed on the family grave headstone. There was a record of her living alone in the 1881 census at ‘The Strang’ and I found her again in 1891at the same address in Browns directory of residents. I believe this was the house of her late father Edward Cowley, born 1785. (Ten years later the family of the next descendent are living in this house).

This old mine, the site of a long and obstinate trial with the most meager results, is located on the east bank of the River Glass opposite the hamlet of Baldwin.

The ruins of this mine may be seen in the East Baldwin valley on the east bank of river 50 yards north of the mill at Ballawyllin.

I did read in a newspaper cutting that (was it Jonathan's widow?) at Mount Rule, who died in the middle of last century - she lived to at least 90 and left many descendants in NZ and America.
