Thomas and Isabelle married the week before Christmas in December 1774.

In that age most weddings would be in winter after the harvest had been gathered and parents had money from the sale of their crops. The island followed Roman law which gave the minimum age for marriage as that of puberty, which was 14 for boys and 12 for girls.

One or both of the parties had to be resident in the parish in whose church the marriage would be solemnised. Generally this was the bride's parish. The churches used by the early Quine families are Church of England.

In 1765, out of 46 entries of burials in the Kirk Onchan parish, 31 are from death by smallpox. This couple lived through that period and thankfully survived for the many generations that came after them. Smallpox was a major killer of young children on the island from the late 17th until the early 19th century.

This family had eight known children, with one child William dying at a young age. John,, the ancestor of the next descendents in the Quine line, was the last child born in June 1793. His eldest sister died the following summer aged just 17 years.

Records indicate the family lived in the parish of Braddan, with Isabel buried in 1813 in Onchan. The town of Douglas was part of Braddan parish, though for some legal purposes, the civil parish of Onchan included part of the rapidly growing North Douglas area. This makes it difficult to identify exactly where they lived. Based on information known from the next generation it may have been known at that time as Tailors Farm, Onchan, possibly in the north Douglas area.

The X near St. Luke's I guess is meant for The Battery, while the other could be for Ballamillaghyn, Mount Rule or indeed Ballachrink West Baldwin, where the other branch coming down from John Quine who lived on Ballamoddha, was living.

In the Onchan burials there are some hints of this family -
Margt. daughter of Thomas Q. from Braddan buried. 14 Aug 1794
Isabella Quine (don't worry about an extra "A") from Braddan buried at Onchan 4 Jan 1813. The Braddan register confirms she is the right lady as it says "Isabel Quine ny Mealey als Corkill to Conchan". It seems "ny Mealay" would mean "of .....with a place name, but I do not recognize this. However according to Broderick's place names there was a Nearey Corkey in Braddan so I would need to look at the original entry which may have been transcribed incorrectly. It would be very useful to know where she was living.
(Nearey will be from yn Eary - the hill pasture, Corkey is oates)
