The Diary of an Lowrider Build

I did something like this in the 80's but it was crude, illegal & very dodgy. This time it'll need to be a little bit neater & legal. There's a whole load of stuff I'm not sure about. Like how to move and place a brake pedal/brake light switch and a back box for the electrics. Trying to find someone over here isn't easy.

Friday 19th September 2003.
picked up a Spanish Series 3 150 frame.

Saturday 20th September 2003.
Today I picked up the Angle Grinder and felt like the butcher from Texas Chainsaw Massacre as I started to hack off all the unwanted bits from the frame.

Friday 26th September 2003.
Took off a few more bits of the frame. Waiting for a petrol tank to arrive before I get the bar fitted.

Monday 29th September 2003
Picked up a petrol tank. A Suzuki one that looks a bit big and needs cleaning up and a petrol tap.
Monday 21st June 2004
Right, scrapped that idea, the Suzuki tank was a minger. I've now picked up a neater tank, that's far better.

Monday 23rd August 2004
Got a contact for a welder to fabricate the frame, so I
spent a bit of time cleaning the rust off the frame at the weekend
Wrapped the frame, and posted today to Gary Simpson in Leeds.

Friday 8th October 2004
Got the frame back today and I'm delighted with the work carried out by Gary. Here's what he did.

Extended the frame 4"
Put in a cross bar
Made two tabs to weld to the tank
Made a back box
Made a seat base
Welded on a side stand
Moved the brake pedal bracket forward
Welded two bases for the footpegs
Two footpegs
Custom brake pedal shape
Cut & fabricated a mudguard to fit back box
Custom one off sprint rack to fit on back box

Friday 8th October 2004
Here's the frame. Gary's done a superb Job.

Friday 8th October 2004
Here's the sprint rack made by Gary.
It's a one off made to fit on the back box & it fits perfectly.

Monday 6th December 2004
Got the frame back from the shot blaster
Monday 6th December 2004
Sprayed primer on right away

Friday 28th January 2005
Since the New Year I've been doing prep work on the frame. Welding tabs onto the tank & welding bolts for the tank. Drilling holes in the frame for the cables and wiring loom and since the last fortnight I've been rubbing down and filling the frame ready for spraying.

Thursday 17th February 2005
I'm still working on the frame & trying to get the frame right for spraying. I've also changed the tank (again) to a coffin type. Simply down to one thing, capacity. The other tank didn't hold enough petrol.

Friday 29th April 2005
I got as far as I could with the prep work for the lowrider and decided to start the spraying. I had hardly started when the compressor died on me. though I did manage to get the primer on. So I went on to cans (paint not beer).
Sunday 31st April 2005
Finished spraying.

Saturday 15th May 2005
Forks in, engine in, cables and wiring in through the frame.
Still plenty to do.

Monday 7th June 2005
More stuff done. Got the seat back, fitted the headset, footpegs, front mudguard, blah blah blah...I'm just trying to sort out the electrics which is not going well! Apart from that there's isn't much else to do.

Monday 15th August 2005
Passed the MOT on July 19th & now registered. Over 600 miles on the clock so far. I've had problems with the exhaust bracket snapping off at the rear. I'm having a new support bracket made and I'll see how that goes.
