Monksthorpe Cottage Restoration Project
Will you help, please?
Please help the National Trust and Friends of Monksthorpe to complete the restoration of this unique historic gem.
Historic details
Monksthorpe Baptist Chapel dates back to 1701, but Baptist dissenters met for worship on or near this site before then. It was always remote, hidden away where non-conformist Christians could meet in secret. With no freedom of religion persecution was common. People came from far and wide to meet here.
Worship continued on the site and in Victorian times the church saw a revival and the building was modernised. About this time it is believed the cottage and stable were built.
The chapel keeper and his family lived here till after World War II.
Regular services were held till into the 1970s, but tree roots eventually caused the chapel to become unsafe. The Friends of Monksthorpe was established in the early 1990s and the premises were entrusted to the National Trust in 2000. National Trust funds enabled the restoration of the chapel and the initial work on the cottage.

The Trust would like to restore the cottage so that it looks like this! They have some of the funds but need help
if the restoration is to be sooner rather than later
