sculpture, objects & installation
from benjamin
|
|
|
|
Benjamin creates three dimensional art of objects in space. This
is often found objects and processed or 'assisted' rather than created,
and is sometimes site-specific. See some examples of his work below.

Circuit City
A cityscape of circuitry and CDRs in the urban oasis of an overgrown North London
backyard.

Guidance
Transporting crowd barriers (purchased at cost, with thanks to Tensator)
across London we were able to experiment with people's movement in space.

Ultimately the barriers became a frame or platform creating
the necessary artificiality for the art to exist within.

Models & Doorways
These works consist of models constructed from found objects and photographed
to create the illusion of a 'life-size' physical environment.

Tubes
As part of this period of works which included the barriers, lines
and mazes, the tube works were anpther development inspired by directional
systems.
|
|
|
|
Found and collected items were extended into a work which
encompassed the whole shared studio space.
|
| |
Lines
We are bound in our behaviours by the most arbitrary of barriers; often
simply painted lines. I took these divisions and communications on
an aesthetic journey around the studio.

This piece was also recreated for a group show at The
Quicksilver Gallery, Middlesex University in April 1999.

It could be irony or a self-fulfilling prophecy that
I latterly worked with these kind of barriers and lines on a daily basis.

Roads
The open road is a powerful idealistic symbol in Western society;
but spaghetti junction could be its antithesis. Or is it? Perhaps this
systematic circuitry is the next stage, and there is an obvious analogue
with our ever-present 'information super highway'. Again using found objects,
I explored the idea of roads and pathways.

I grew up with a view of a motorway. Sometimes I would ride to one of the bridges to look down on the cars:
the continuous sound was almost soothing. |

apocalypse of the
first city
I created a city from found objects, imagery and text; and then systematically
destroyed it by erosion and fire.

Icons
purely aesthetic items made from found objects and images, but by
exploring their properties and resonances they took on the form of devotional
icons or totems.
